I didn't want to be the flashy lead player.

It's interesting to see guys beat up on soloists in a musical form where the majority of the rhythm work consists mainly of root-fifth power chords. *shrugs
this place is known for shred / metal / virtuosity IMO; at least it was before/when I joined, and before the HCAF implosion and the shanty town here.

By the time I got here, metal was far in my past; but lots of good gear info so I stuck around awhile.

I

I shed like a motherfucker and it gets me pussy so I must girls like it a lot. What I find is shred is like math . Math is amazing . But it you don’t like math it’s not for you I get it . Shred can be very hard to follow fir many .
You got to shred with real emotion to make it work . Some guys who shred can’t do that and it ruins it for the great ones
I'd love to hear some clips. It's always fun finding new players who can tear it up!

Here’s me . Check out the entire track . It’s weird but I actually enjoyed what played. Each note is important .
I know it’s not for everyone . But I love listening to anyone who can shred . @Ben Waylin and others got great clips with some shred .. you should post some too . I think I’ve heard you play . Maybe I’m wrong

Cool, rippin! Thanks. Sounds great!

99% of guitar solos are boring horseshit. 1% of them are awesome, melodic, memorable, etc. Actually, maybe not even 1%.
I completely agree with this. I also believe slam dunking a basketball, being a fighter pilot, scoring a TD in a Super Bowl, winning a Formula 1 race, patenting a new life-saving medical device, becoming CEO of a major corporation and I could go on and on and on, are also "horseshit".

What I want, for once, is for anyone who can actually do any of the above including being a phenomenal lead guitarist, to say something like that. It never happens.

I did some prog metal, thrash metal and black metal back in the day; but hair metal was more fun and less effort.

here's a pic of me back in the day, around 1994, playing bass in a black metal band (my last band; photo shoot. I'm 6'5", 195 or so pounds, 30" waist, and still fit. lol. IIRC I had a haircut shortly before this pic, because it was nearly down to my waist - like cousin it from the Addams family.

I don't have many pics because they were usually film cameras and I lost most all of them in basement floods over the years.

for the hair metal bands I'd shave my face, and wear brighter colors; and maybe some spandex. thankfully, no known pics survive :D

edit; fixed typo in my weight. I remember the 30" waist because I kept these pants for many years trying to get them to fit again!

Yes! The Hair days…me in ‘90 visiting the best place in the United States to get accosted in a public park!

Exactly . Many people say solos are shit but secretly wish they could . But they didn’t want to practice as much . Not saying this about anyone here . But it’s a fact

Also I don’t shred when it’s not called for . Here’s me trying to play like Angus in 1977 . Blues with a touch modal notes at timeshttps://youtu.be/hMBdGd2sveU?si=_2LqalaORDFh2ea8
This is jcm TSL on right and an old best up mark 1 with a hollow body on the left . Gave it a nasty grind

I hate kiss, and I'm definitely more on the "appreciating technical stuff" side

But I think there's a nugget of truth he's basing his semi-stupid statement on - most people who are really good at guitar are not very good at writing music. It's a hard line to balance.

The vast majority of non-famous dudes i know who can seriously shred are not very good at writing music; and the most self-aware of them will even admit it.

That being said, especially when it comes to random forum people, the types of dudes who would either agree with kiss guy, or say similar stuff, only say it because they're lazy and never put the practice in to become any good.

I'll take Kiss guy's music, career and investments vs a random shredder virtuoso in a forum...or even well known shredders like Vai, Satriani, etc. If the song isn't very good, a great solo won't save it - it's like lipstick on a pig.

As a random forum person who agrees with Kiss guy, it's not about being lazy or practice time, it's about goals, priorities and interests. No one ever claimed Kiss had great musical virtuosity, what they did have is a successful band that let them fill arenas and stadiums around the world for decades.

Another example, EVH wrote great songs and solos; I'm sure he could have let loose even more on many solos but he probably realized doing that added nothing to song, and likely took something away from the song.

If being a virtuoso shredder is your goal ,go for it, if being a successful musician is your goal, go for it; plenty of other goals too; individual goals are valid even if they're not the same as our own goals.

IMO.

I agree, but I think there are a ton of people who conflate those two very different goals.

I.E. being a successful musician vs being a shredder

What I'm saying is there's a nugget of truth in kiss guys statement, at least in my experience. Alot of the guys who have great chops write music that's absolutely awful - that's what separates the famous guitar hero dudes. They can write music that appeals to people AND have the technical skills.

That's partly why YouTube shills annoy so many people - they're terrible songwriters who have put their 10k hours in, ALA pete thorn or fluff.
