Tom Murphy is flaky.

I thought they had fixed the flaking with the first batch of issues. The ones I've seen in person hadn't looked like this but didn't check when they were made. Still hear good things about the VOS finishes, and Tom Murphy used to (still does?) relic/paint those in small numbers, they should just go that route instead.

Looks like it is time to grab a blade and get to scraping! Clear that neck up and give it a real vintage look. For 9k.... I'd be in tears. I couldn't imagine spending that on a plain old Gibson.

I think it's awesome. Overpriced slab of mahogany with a horseshit finish. I wouldn't have paid that kinda money but I sure would rock it. Send it to me, I wear all the finish and frets off the natural way and send it back to you for rehab.

The majority of heavy relic Gibson I’ve seen have a really strange finish on the backs and necks. It’s like the finish is raised and bobbling - like crazy paving. Feels and looks really weird. I have a beat up ‘73 LP Custom which has natural lacquer cracks and the ML heavy relics I’ve seen look and feel nothing like it. Not too surprised the finishes are still flaking off tbh.

I wonder how many of the people who buy heavy aged relics new are also the people who turn their noses at used guitars with some genuine play wear….

Ouch, that hurts just looking at it, imagine if it was your guitar
Friends don't let friends buy Murphy Lab Gibsons, or new Gibsons in general.

I had '78 LP Custom I purchased new as a kid; my first real guitar; weighed a few tons, the weight of the guitar on my shoulder would make my arm and had go numb, even then fit and finish wasn't the best, the gold plate didn't last long on the bridge and bridge pickup...that said, I do like the white custom, nickel/chrome hardware, though not at that price, and not for a Gibson:

Great idea if you can find a way to sell it to TGP crowd - AUTHENTIC relic jobs. They pay you so they can send you their nice expensive guitars and you just play them hard - take them to gigs and everything. Eventually you send them back all fucked up…eventually. Well, they probably won’t be waiting as long as anyone paying for a new Cameron.

The problem is using the wrong pore filler process with the low-plasticizer nitro lacquer. This was told to Gibson by about a half dozen well known luthiers who were refinishing these R9's when it first started happening. Of course, that fell on deaf ears because Gibson & Murphy think they know everything.
