I don't think they're overly bright, but they are on the lean side down low. Quite a tight kind of gain for a Marshall type amp, so presumably there's quite a bit of LF filtering in the preamp and the idea is to make it up with the deep circuit.

That's my experience too with the low end. Bass is always dimed and bring in the thickness with the depth knob or using an eq in the loop (a great loop!) helps too.

Im not against his builds at all. They sound great but they also sound really, really bright. I wish there were comparisons of them through various speaker options and playing riffs in something other than E or Eb.

By any chance, do you know or remember what preamp tube was in V1? I tried a Tung-sol in that slot and it was an immediately brighter amp. I think I recall Bill demonstrating a Lexi on YouTube in which he stated the preamp tube brands. The Tung-sol being in V1. Mine came with JJ ECC83s, an EH in loop, Sovtek LPS in PI.

Not sure if they are original tubes, but both of my Landry's have Tung Sol's in V1. The G3 has Groove tubes in V2-V4 (all balanced, oddly enough) and then an RCA (NOS) 12at7 in the reverb driver (I put that in there) and a balanced JJ 12ax7 in the phase inverter.

The Lexi has the Tung Sol in V1, a Sovtek LPS in V2, balanced JJ in V3, regular JJ in V4 and a balanced JJ in the PI.

The G3 as JJ EL34's and the Lexi has JJ EL34L's in the power section.

I wouldn't call either of them overly bright, but I don't really play anything tuned down past Eb or Drop D/Drop D flat.

The Lexi has the Tung Sol in V1, a Sovtek LPS in V2, balanced JJ in V3, regular JJ in V4 and a balanced JJ in the PI.

LPS in V2? I'll have to try that tube in that spot with my Lexi. Right now I'm running an EH7025 in V1, Mullard RI CV4004 in V2, JJ E83cc in V3, EH12AX7 in V4, EH 7025 in PI. It's very aggressive with this lineup of tubes.

Funny you mentioned that.
When I ordered one of his amps onetime we talked influences etc and the sounds I was after.
Well I mentioned Alice In Chsins a few times, he felt Jerry’s tone and their music was very “dark”…
Tone’s not subjective, it ms really objective.

For me dude and having 3 of his amps:
They’re just too polite.
I don’t go after angry tones per say either.
I don’t like digital reverb either.
His negative feedback controls don’t bring on the sub lows or facemellters.
I forgot about the depth control all together.
The look… looks like amp from Montana.
Not knocking MO and I was glad he’s changed the look, almost like the vibe of plastic sheathing on grandma’s Davenport .
Not the best resale value either so get prepared to exercise patience when listing it.

However, I did like the 6L6 amp he had for a limited time due to transformer aviailabolity etc.
Like the Springsteen lyric:
- “like a river that’s flowing,
I took a wrong turn and kept on going”..
Too bad he didn’t go more into that realm of rippage in the amp designs.

I tried the Sovtek LPS in V2. That neutered the amp. Horrible tone. I'll stick with what I mentioned above. With those tubes, the Lexi has more aggression. Channel 2 gain is only on 9-10 o'clock. Playing Slash Alnico II Pro HBs in an Ibanez PS Iceman.

I tried to record a clip with my phone, but it does not capture what I hear in the room. It would not due the amp justice.
