A cautionary tale of choosing the right refinisher: How my 93 PRS CU24 got "ruined".

The Guitar:
So I've had this 93 PRS CU24 for a very long time now. It was passed down to me from a family member who passed as I am the only one in the family that plays guitar. Needless to say, the guitar means a lot to me.

The work I've done:
So this guitar is warm/dark. Since it will never leave my possession, I've taken liberty to do things to it that you'd never want to do if you're worried about resale or value. I sanded the neck and put an oil/wax finish on it. I've swapped the pickups over a dozen times. I even sent it to evertune to have an evertune installed. Every big step I took seemed to brighten up the guitar, especially sanding down the neck. The finish on this guitar was easily 2mm or more thick. I had an idea.. Get the body refinished in my favorite color with Nitro. The guitar was tobbaco burst on the front and solid black on the back. I've been working on guitars professionally for over a decade, but I am far from being a painter/finisher. I wanted to leave that to a PRO.

The refinisher:
I had a friend recommend a builder. That friend had been to his shop and said his finishes were top notch. On this guy's Instagram he removed the top on a PRS SE and put on a 1 piece quilted maple top. He looked absolutely professional in every way and his work looked amazing. I told him to strip the body, paint the top a blue metallic and leave the back natural.

The horror:
The guy told me the guitar was finished. A week or two later he nearly cut his finger off with a bandsaw. I went up to grab the guitar and he mentioned, "I didn't finish buffing it out completely, but it's good to go". OK. No worries. I shoot the shit with him for an hour and leave with the guitar. I did not take an in depth look at my guitar when I was there. I get home and get to take a closer look under good lighting. The guitar is so fucked up. The refinishing is just.. Absolutely trash. Objectively. I've wanted to get this guitar refinished for over a decade and wanted to wait for the right place. Here's some highlights of how fucked up this thing is.

The guitar before refinishing:

From a distance, the refinish looks great. Note: I sanded the cavities and painted them with black shielding paint.

There is pig tailing all over the guitar from his sander. You can see at the bottom of this light streak. There's more all over, but it's hard to get the lighting.

There are still remnants of black paint from the original finish on the back of the guitar. These specs are under the new clear coat. Also there is a black ring around the electronics cavity from him not sanding back the finish completely. That is also under the new clear coat.

The upper horn and lower horn is sanded incredibly rough. I know for a fact buffing wouldn't clean this up.

More spots where the original black finish wasn't completely removed.

Here's one more crushing blow and the one that bothers me the most. The lower horn and hand contour was masked poorly.. And then finish put over it.

The solution?
The top is actually OK. The color is pretty spot on to what I asked for. It's just the rest of this guitar looks like garbage. I'm thinking about sending it to MJT, I've sent them multiple guitars and refinished when I worked for a builder. The whole thing is I didn't want to ship this guitar and risk it being damaged in shipping.

Thanks for coming to my RIGtalk and letting me vent. I put this guitar in it's case and haven't touched it in weeks. I literally feel sick to my stomach thinking about it and posting this.

If you want to strip it and do it yourself I would recommend formby’s furniture refinisher for removal. Sucks bro.

Sorry to hear/see that....that's terrible. Good luck going forward, hope you get it sorted the way it deserves to be.
Ugh

It sure as hell looks better than it did.... it was ruined before you ever sent it to the dude...

Now I will say,
People pay good money for relic finish....

That is definitely a $300 job. The top coat looks really good actually. Crowd will never know.

You paid $300 and got a $300 job.
What is the issue bro? I mean really....

How much was the guitar?
And you spent $300 on it for a total refinish...

Looks fine for $300.

It looks twice as expensive with that new color.

Do you know how long it takes to detail little things that you are pointing out? Like the paint in weird places, it's tough and takes time and delicate work to get those places perfect.

NOBODY expects that for $300.

Come on now. 🤏

Man that sucks. :(

I have had a PRS 305 for a number of years and always wanted a refin + rear humbucker route. I am sending it to the PRS PTC crew in a week or so here. The mod and refin will cost more than a local guy, but it will be a factory job.

That sucks, man. Dick move to even take your money...

You'd expect the guy accepting currency for work to understand the work he's doing, especially considering he has a history of doing it. Not surprised a welder thinks that way though!

For $300.00 it looks good. Did you strip it? I would have stripped and prepped the body myself first. Or paint it a solid color.

I did all the stripping, sanding and grain fill myself on the X-79 project. Told the guy how I wanted it done and he didn’t do any of it. Turned out ok, needs buffed badly. $1100 later…

If it makes you feel any better, the stickers were removable and had no effect on the guitar. The wear and tear on the guitar are from my relative and myself gigging the guitar constantly for the past 30 years.

I expect the work I pay for to be competent and complete. I regularly do refrets, headstock repairs, or wiring at a discount if it's a referral from a friend. Especially when it's other industry people. I never do shoddy work. It almost always gaurentees that client returns for more work. I've make a living fixing other "techs" shitty wiring or work. There have been times I've refused to work on some clients guitars because I don't have the right tools to get it done. It disgusts me when people take money and do shoddy work. Seeing this quality of work, I doubt he could do any better for more money. MJT quoted me $425+/- a few years back.

But thank you for your input, aren't you the same guy holding into someone's money to "teach them a lesson" or whatever?

I was cool with it until you posted a pic of the upper horn that looked like he had taken a wire wheel on an angle grinder to remove the paint. Man his sanding work is ROUGH to put it nicely. It's like some 12 year old kid did the work. Ain't ruined though. Just strip it, sand it to up to 320 till the sanding scratches are gone, and redo it yourself. It ain't rocket science, it's just all prep work for the most part. Might want to use a grain filler before you spray it if you get it back down to raw wood.

Not good work. Nitro is is going to look like crap after couple of years of use anyway, though.

I had a similar experience with my main beast. I got the neck nitro'd. And we talked about how to blend into poly.

I love the nitro finish, but they transitions are pretty bad. And guy scratched the top of my guitar. I paid more than 300.

I was kind of irritated, but i was without the thing for a month or so. When it came back, i was so happy to be playing it again, i just havent even bothered to think of fixing it.

I agree, the tiny little pig tails are a little eye roll-y to me for a 300$ job from a friend...buttt

the access bout is pretty fucking shit man. That's brutal. Like, I do better work on my own partscasters brutal.

I would probably send it to MJT or whatever. This is always the risk you take with a "deal from a friend" unfortunately. Hope you get it fixed man.

3rd that. I think I could probably get by most of it, but the lower access job and upper horn are pretty gnarly.
