Well....Cameron was playing a Cameron. Most of what you were hearing response wise had to do with the amp and not the pickup in the guitar.
That said, the 'Demon has its fans and is a cool pickup. You might dig it, but it is quite different from a true "hot PAF" (the '78 is in that category)...
I have had Custom Shop '78s with A2, A5 and A8 magnets.
A2 to A5 in the 78 gave a bit more low end and attack and a bit more output.
Screamin' Demon is quite a different pickup: 10k, 43awg wire (very low winds for that type of wire) and A5 magnet. I always found the stock 'Demon to be...
Marshall was arguably competing with the modders already in the 80's with the split channel 2210/2205 800's and then the Silver Jubilee.
The 900s for sure we're carrying that on, as both the SLX and Mkiii have preamp similar to a 2203, but with and extra tube gain stage in the SLX and diode...
The Custom and Custom 5 were staple go to pickups in my Les Paul's and SG's for years. I had the same irks regarding the '59 neck model: I found it a bit underpowered and woofy.
I went to a coupled self-modded models that I loved paired with the Custom. One was a '59 neck with a regular sized...
Probably my Wizard w800. Even though it is Rick's take on his idealized 800, it feels/responds like a Superlead with more pre-amp gain on tap and tone shaping.
Volume up, the superleads mids fill out and bloom more, whereas the Wizard stays more linear.
Yup. Absolutely classic for a reason. And end of the day, if you are after THAT thing that a superlead can do or a MV jmp/early 2203/2204 can do, there really isn't a substitute.
I think I personally haven't tried it because I have never liked the results I got boosting a VH4 and just figured all Diezels would react like that. Clearly narrow thinking on my end! Haha!
Awesome man! The Metals are really great; tight and with a broad midrange that is not abrasive (like I...
Not alot of folks know what an S-Deco is, but it used to be listed on the Custom Shop site.
12k-ish 43awg wind, with a PAF-ish voice. I have had them with A2, A5 and A8 mags and they all sound great!
Not sold on the rails, but I have used Duncan's with A8's quite a bit.
My favorite was an S-Deco Custom shop, with two rows of hex screws and an A8. Had just the right amount of drive, tightness, brightness and no weird/offensive mid frequencies.
Awesome clip, man. I have also never tried boosting a Herbert, but from the overtones I am hearing, hitting the front end really lights it up!
Also, beautiful Custom 24's! What pickups do you have in your 35th Anniversary Custom 24?
Ya, I was thinking about this. I remember when guys would buy a 2203/2204 or superlead and immediately send it off for mods to their guy of choice. Now? The unmodded, unmolested Marshalls are getting top dollar and lots of guys are getting them un-modded.
I could see that happen with the Rev...
If I had a Rev F, I would be leaving it stock and doing what I used to do when I ran Rectos: boost up front and eq in the loop.
My next favorite in that demo would be the Hermansson. Not very Recto like anymore, but some very serious clarity, tightness and articulation!
Some really good points here! Ya, the Jubes and 2205/2210's showed that Marshall was already addressing the modding craze in the 80's. I really loved the 2210 I used to own. It was an '88 if I recollect.
The place to start with a Jose is a Superlead, which I have read Jose much preferred over...
My old man still has an early 70's Superlead and it is an absolute monster of an amp.
I am very certain you would really love and appreciate what it could do: clear, punchy and those old Marshall mids just get fatter and fatter as you up the volume while still keeping that kerrang.
I love...
The SLX and mkiii JCM 900's were really Marshalls answer to the modded 800/jmp/superlead thing.
The SLX has another tube gain stage....the mkiii is 3 stages (very similar to a 2203) but with diode clipping that you can dial in/out.
Don't discount the mkiii's if you find one for a deal; I...
Man, I am old enough that when I was playing in punk and hardcore bands, Rev G's (along with 5150's and every iteration of 2203/2204) were a dime a dozen. Everybody played one, because if you were a touring musician, they were decent amps that were reliable and you could afford one.
They...
I had an el34 SLX back in 2001-2002, I wanna say? I bought that and a jcm 800 2210 at the same time off a guy for 500 Canadian each.
I really dug it and it is definitely an amp you can dial in to sound and respond really good....or really bad. A friend in another band absolutely loved it and...
