I am looking into getting a handwired clone of the 18w tmb style Marshall, head format. It will come with MV built in. I really love the idea of it and how versatile it is but I am wondering if I would be able to get anywhere near 80's gain sounds, or how I'd be able to. I tend to be opposed to overdrive pedals as a whole; however, it isn't above me to push the front end with an MXR micro amp or to use a tube screamer not unlike early Hetfield(essentially with level maxed but low gain, with EQ straight up).

I am not trying to get the sound of an ENGL Fireball out of of these, I would just like to be able to get close to the sounds of Tool's Undertow/Opiate era or the first 2 Metallica albums. As for Tool, yes I am well aware; by Undertow he had the Mesa, but to my ears it doesn't have an appearance on Opiate.

The cabinet it will most likely be paired with is a 2x12 of undetermined make (probably going to end up being a sour mash) loaded with either 25w greenbacks or 30w heritage celestions. I'm also considering a 1960 4x12 with greenbacks. Any recommendations on cab or speakers also welcome.

Anybody out there have one modded for extra gain, or have any recommendations and/or soundclips? I've heard about the various mods such as cascading, or the "lo to hi" mod, but I don't really know anything about them or how they sound so anything and everything is welcome.

P.S.
I went to the http://www.18watt.com site although that did absolutely nothing for me, it appears to be defunct at the moment.

For starters, dig up schematics for Soldano Atomic 16, Friedman PT20, and other high-gain 18-watt amps. It can be done, although it takes a bit of work to get right because EL84s don't need a large drive signal.

Thanks man, I have only recently gotten into schematics research and modding and all that so this definitely helps. One question though, what do you mean exactly by EL84's not needing a "large drive signal", and the extra work this denotes?

Bump to anybody else who wants to share something?
