So, I got my 2nd Grendel Dead Room yesterday, and got one set up with a CL80, and the other with a G12T75. Put one SM57 in each mic'ed on the dust cap. It's not directly on axis, nor in the middle of the dust cap. It is near where the cone and dust cap meet, at about 10-15 degree from 90 off the axis of the dust cap. I'm totally digging what I've got so far. Here's a clip of an idea I just started tracking. The drums are just a loop from EZDrummer's stock Pop/Rock kit.

Leads are EG4 and rhythms are ...you guessed it...EG5!!!

Enjoy!

It sure is! ;)

Holy Cow Eric !!!!!!!! That freaking tone is killing man.   I am very impressed and this makes me really want to get the guys together to start this tone party again.

Your sound clips never stop amazing me. I just can't get enough of these Eggie's being recorded. I hope to have some decent mixes done real soon and some pre-mastering done of the tracks that a band recorded using my new tourmaster. It is hands down some of the best guitar tones I have captured. They came in and heard me playing to warm the beast up and was like, "what the heck amp is that". There was no looking back and we used her all day to track their stuff.

Egnater makes recording guitar tones a freaking breeze man !!!!!!!!

Well thanks man! I can't say enough goodness for the EG5. It's by far "my sound"!!! I'm really pleased with the 2 grendel dead rooms I'm recording with. Makes it nice because I can get the same consistent tone everytime I go downstairs. Mind you I can do it in a house where my wife and baby are sleeping at 12 am :). I couldn't be more pleased!

Sounds great Eric, no surprise there! Maybe try the mics a little more toward the cone to pick up a little more punch and high end, but definitely monstrous! Nice playing too!

Eric, that sounds incredible!!! Love the TONE!!! I can't wait to get my MOD50!!!

I had a Grendel for a short period. I found that I really couldn't get the punch and high end. Everything was low end and I couldn't easily dial it out. I had the amp presence and treble way up and the bass way down and it got better, but the amps character was lost. These recordings have the same heaviness mine had, which is great if that's what you're after. The clips are certainly mean sounding!

Eric, how do you find working with mics in the Grendel? I found that trying to get a 57 straight on about half way up the cone was almost impossible due to the insulation in the box. I thought more room should have been allowed in the Grendel for better micing.

It really all depends on how you mic it. I spent a LONG time "figuring out" the best ways to mic my amp with the grendel. If you have just one, the best way is to put on 57 about 2-3 inches away from the center of the dust cap at a 90 angle to the cap. Throw another 57 in there pointed at the same position (to avoid phase cancellation) but at a 45 degree angle pointed at where the dust cap and cone meet. I've never had to dime the presence or remove the low end of the amp. I mic it the same way I have always mic'ed regular cabs and I've had 0 problems.

With regards to low end, on any cab I've always had to roll off the low end of the guitar w/ EQ (as you always will have to either in a live situation, or recording situation) so the guitar will fit in the mix and not compete with the bass. I usually roll of the guitars anywhere between 120hz and 150hz depending on what tone I'm looking for. That way the guitars sit in the mix really well, and don't have overpowering lows.

I know Alex is working on a new design for his dead rooms. I personally have loved the tone I was getting from them. I never really felt the clips didn't have enough top end to them. I'm using 2 Grendels now...one with a G12T75 and one with a CL80 (mimicing my TM cab) and I LOVE the tone :). But what works for me, may not work for everyone.
