1. How should one differentiate between the use of 'mute' and 'standby' ? Is standby long periods of time and mute short? and why whatever the reason is?

2. I accidentally turned my Herbert off from the power button instead of standby, I quickly turned standby off afterwards (though this probably makes no difference) does this matter?/is there anything I should consider when turning it back on?

Thank you very muchly

1)
Mute: cuts signal before the first tube (as if you would unplug the guitar)
standby: shuts off high voltage from the power tubes, heaters/filaments still on, bias voltage still on

2) don't worry, its a fucking Diezel :D
Just operate normally

Hence, standby prolongs power tube life. Your assumption was right.

 wonderful stuff. But thus is there any reason why I shouldn't just put it on standby even if I'm going to be not that long?

can I switch different cabinets..so unplug the cabinet..when switch only standby button off and let the power button on?

thanks a lot

@ Sam: no reason whatsoever. The mute function is maybe there to create a silent tuning patch when using MIDI. Just overbuilt Diezel stuff, y'know :-)

@ Borkincz: yes you can. But you should wait for like 20 seconds. I don't know how to explain it technically correct, but I think some caps have to get rid of their charge and the amp still needs a load (cabinet) at this point. You can hear the sound decrease slowly when you play a note and then switch the amp on standby. After that has happended, it should be safe to unplug the cab.
When there is no input, there's no output, so the OT basically doesn't need a load. I strongly recommend connecting a cab/load to a tube amp before switching it on, though. But I switch cabinets a lot with my amp on standby when I'm recording.
