2000 Gibson Les Paul 1958 Historic R8 - Sam Ash Exclusive - Black
This is number 67 from a Sam Ash limited run of 75 guitars.
I never imagined ever selling this guitar.
However, I was fortunate enough to have a unique opportunity to purchase a vintage Les Paul.
A dream guitar of mine, but it set me back quite a bit - thus I need to raise some cash.
* So no trade offers please!
I'm super anal when it comes to hand picking Historics.
I've literally gone through dozens since I joined here, and The Gear Page forum back in 2003 searching for Tone Monsters.
With that, I ended up with (2) keepers (this R8, and a 2007 R7), and right up till this very day, they have not been dethroned by any others that have come and gone.
Both are absolute incredible sounding/ playing Historics.
Super acoustically resonant w/ singing sustain.
I racked my brains out trying to decide on which to let go.
I ultimately choose this R8, only because it will fetch more money.
There are some very nice upgrades I had done to the guitar.
I play old school lower gain classic rock, and wanted to upgrade the stock Gibson pickups with a PAF type that was a little hotter/ fatter.
I auditioned quite a few boutique picks - Holmes, Throbak, Rolph, Lollar, Motor City, Righteous Sound, etc.....
Most were excellent, but just not 100% what I was looking for.....
On a whim, I picked up a set of Bare Knuckle Mules, and really loved them.
They were 90% there, but I wanted the mids a tad fuller, and a bit more "oomph" overall.
I contacted Tim at Bare Knuckle, and he suggested I try the Abraxas set.
He said they are like a Mule on steroids........ similarly voiced, with fuller mids.
I ordered a set, and BAM, they sound incredible!
After I purchased the Abraxas set, I also wanted to upgrade the electronics (VIPots & Hovland Musicaps) and had my tech professionally install everything.
Other upgrades also installed by my tech include -
- ThroBak Aged Nickel Gibson Style ABR-1 No Wire Bridge w/ threaded mounting posts and thumbwheels.
- TonePros Lightweight Aluminum Tailpiece.
The guitar is in very good shape, but it's not a case queen.
It has some cosmetic flaws you would come to expect from a 21 year old guitar.
Some small dings/ light scratches as well as a little marring in a couple of small spots near the bridge & tailpiece.
Back has some light worming.
Also, there is some clear coat surface scratches (worming) on back of the neck near the body (see photo)
Never bothered me, and I was was actually going to sand the clear coat off the back of the neck to make it smooth like I did on my R7, but just never got around to it.
Frets are in great shape with minimal wear.
Fretboard has a Gorgeous grain to it, and like all my guitars was conditioned once or twice a year with Fret Doctor (great stuff!) https://beafifer.com/boredoctor.htm
Weight is 8 lbs 13 oz on a digital postal scale.
I don't know for certain, but have read these didn't come with a COA, and that's what I was told by the guy I bought it from.
Includes OHSC
