2009 Rack - Build Phase Photos

Hey guys -

I'm finally in-town long enough to start wiring my new rig. It's a mix of all my favorite old-school and new-school toys, with a twist. Sorry I did not take pics earlier in the build - I got off to a good start before I realized I should document as I go. I'm about 60% wired at this point: AC harness is done; MIDI harness is done; rear panel is done; audio is about halfway.

I'm still missing a power amp, Pedal Power II+, and a Crunchbox.

The rest of the gear I've had for years. The only thing I bought was $60 worth of lite-ply to make the tolex case. It came out great! It's 14 spaces using Mesa SUS-4 rails. It's 14" rail-to-rail and covered in black tolex.

It's designed to be very flexible: I'll use it in stereo; WDW by adding any amp with a loop and a center dry cab; and in mono with any amp w/loop.

I'll update this over the next week as I finish up each night.

PS - yes, I know. I could have just bought an AXE-FX - but I'd miss out on all the soldering fun! It helps that I had all of the gear sitting around!

wow, i have a bunch of that stuff. BTW, I think the Rane SM82 sounds noticeably better, and less coloured than the SM26B.

BTW, I can't read the signal flow diagram, what are you using as a splitter for running that RSP550 in parallel with the other stuff.

jimmypage1stfan - I'm making all of the cables myself using Mogami 2552 and Switchcraft 1/4" connectors. The XLR connectors are Nuetrik. The rear panel is something I made using Middle Atlantic Audio UCP products. It's a modular system that you can configure yourself based on your needs.

guitarslinger - I agree, the SM82 is great for guitar rigs for several reasons (tone, flexibility, tweakability). The Echo Pro, RSP-550, and 2290 are all in parallel with the dry signal and they get input via a splitter I made (1 in, 4 out).

Hilly - thanks! Now where's that power amp?

Brian-

Where did you get the SUS-4 rails? I've got a Mesa rack with no rear rails that I would love to add.

Ned

Ned - the rails came directly from Mesa. I called a friend up there and asked if they had any left I could buy. I lucked out, he said they stopped building SUS-4 cases years ago and I bought what they had left. I had been watching craigslist in So. Ca and SUS-4 cases show up once a month or so. Many are beat on the outside but been cheap enough to part-out and get the rails you need.
