20th Shiva - FX Loop experimentation

So last night, I decided to really dive into testing out the FX loop levels on my 20th Shiva. I took a short 6" patch cable, and used that as a jumper between the FX Send and FX Return.

I found that without any cable inserted, the amp sounded as it should. Of course.

With the jumper cable connecting the PEDAL SEND and RETURN, the amp lost a ton of volume and output. I already knew this, but I also noticed some tone loss too. Not much, but the amp felt slightly "flatter" when playing.

With the jumper connecting the RACK SEND and RETURN, lookout - WOW. The amp got WAY louder. Not to mention, I was getting way more overdrive on the clean channel - in a good way. Sounded like a cranked up bassman/plexi past noon. I don't know if it's the increase in dB level, but I swore the amp was more responsive and felt more alive.

Can anyone explain, in dummy terms, what is going on here?

This is not really an answer to your question since I never tried the rack send jack when I had the Shiva 20th, but I can certainly confirm the fact that when using the pedal send jack there's quite an audible loss in tone, i.e. a little volume drop, less punch and a little flatter sound, as you say. I felt that for an amp this expensive the loop should have worked much better. The Shiva sounded the best with guitar straight to amp without FX loop or onboard reverb in use.

Strange, I get no tone or volume drop at all.

damn i guess i have to go actually take the cover off mine and try this

I'm hoping this question is related to this topic -

I'm attempting to use a pedal (without adjustable input/output) AND a rack effects unit (with adjustable input/output) in the Shiva loop. I cannot get a hot enough signal for the rack unit via the pedal-send so I want to use the rack (i.e. hotter) send for both units.

My question is: how do you know if you are overloading the pedal? Is it really obvious (it's a delay pedal).

Is there a way to measure the dB output on the loop to know if this signal is too hot for the pedal??

Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks.
