Picking it up on Thursday. No reverb but apparently had the footswitch modded so the vintage and modern modes are footswitchable.

To be paired up with my 20th XTC

Kickass man!!! The 20th Shiva is a great amp. I recently bought an XTC 101B too. Both are amazing in their own way.

If you ever decide you want to try a tube swap, just give me a holler. I modded mine to accept EL34's. Simple resistor snip.

Thanks. My xtc is el34 so I'm really interested to try out the kt88's. I assume theyre related to el34's ?

Yes. KT88's almost have the opposite EQ curve, as well as compression behavior, of an EL34.

KT88's are related to 6550's.

They're just "harder" sounding in general. More highs, glassier, bigger harder lows. A very punchy, stout sounding tube that doesn't have a lot of flex and squish like an EL34.

Yeah, I didn't like the hardness of the 6550's in there and didn't care for the feel (no give)...this is my view: 6550/KT88 super tight for metal and Drop C or lower tunings...for rock I like an EL34 or KT77. Awesome amp. Enjoy!

Cheers for in info

Can you send me details of the el34 mod please

Thanks

Dazzza,
The mod is simply snipping the piggyback resistors on the bias. The resistors are there in stock form so that the bias can get into the right range for the KT88s. When the resistors are snipped (which puts the circuit back to regular Shiva form), you can get the 28-29ma range necessary for the EL34s.

Why so cold? Because of the way the resonance (power amp bass circuit) is run, the bias drifts upward as the amp is pushed. So beware...if you want a bedroom amp then stick with the KT88s. Those sound absolutely the same throughout the dynamic range of the amp. The EL34s only get out of crossover when pushed. Hence one of the main reasons Bogner went to the KTs in this design.

I should have added:
A Bogner with crossover distortion is just sad, for they are such sweet, harmonically rich sounding amps. The EL34 will normally come out of crossover at 32-34ma, depending on the tubes.

Picked up the Shiva today. 1st impressions are very good, def a different flavour to the XTC but unmistakeably Bogner, can't wait for next rehearsal. Plenty flexible enough with the boost and footswitchable modes.

Here she is with the XTC

and with my Guitars

Now I need to figure out the easiest way to run them together !!

This is exactly the setup Im hoping to be into soon...except I need the 20 xtc.....I love my 20th shiva and would love to know how to switch the (2 pushbuttons) in and out thats on ch2 with the footswitch....so there is a way to do this?

The new Shiva is the best amp Bogner makes next to the Goldfinger. Only complaint is the sheer amount of gain. I find the 20th Shiva has far too much gain which hurts its dynamics. I may be moving away from Bogner all together unless I can score the Goldfinger. But, I am finding the Mesa Electradyne sounds just as good as my Shiva, much btter dynamics and cheaper to boot. :)
