the 20th Shiva with 88's kicks ass and takes names. what a cool amp. you can really crank the master up on this thing and make it sing. very "Cantrell-ish" too.

The 20th Shiva is a great amp, any way you slice it - KT88s or EL34s.

Both tube's have their merits, and will add different flavor to the amp. Both sound GREAT in their own way.

Tell you what guys, this 20th Shiva is the SHIZ - and here's how to make it breathe fire.....

Took the chassis out and yanked out the reverb pan from the shell and unhooked from the chassis as well as V11, the reverb tube. Stuck a balanced Sovtek LPS in V1 and a Ruby HG+ in V2 and a Ruby HG in V3. Everything else stock China B's. Got out the new Compu-Bias to check the bias on the stock Sovtek 88's and they were about 18 each (WTF Jorg?). I was checking my 88 stock and all I had were JJ's then I saw I had a brand new matched quad of SED Winged C 6550's. Thought I would give them a shot. It doesn't take much to outdo Sovtek 88's. Slapped two of them in and biased them up to about 40 each. PV was about 470 which is kicking for this little amp. The amp only has a 22K bias resistor and a hell of a lot of range on the adjustment.

Removed all the crap and plugged into the chassis to give it a whirl and a Bogner 412 with V30's. Holy shit!!!! I almost shot a wad down both legs. These 6550's make the little Shiva get up and moon walk across the cab. This bad boy is quickly gaining favored amp status around my cave. The 6550 give it the 34 growl you expect, but a bottom end to beat all hell.

My clock settings on Channel 2 are something like this:

I had a regular Shiva at my house for a short time and I loved the cleans but the overdrive was so so. The clips on the 20th on the other hand just blew me away. I'd love to hear it in person!!

Getting the China B's out of V2/V3 thickened it up a little and I love Sovtek LPS's in V1 of all my amps. Removing the reverb totally from the equation maybe contributed. These 6550's are the biggest factor though. It took the amp from bad boy to bad ass....

You bastard!! What about putting 6550's in the Twin Jet? Don't you have to be carefull with higher PV's. 6550's are only rated to 450 PV. KT88's to 800.

Huh? The 6550C and KT88's are drop in replacements for each other. The 6550 is good for 600V. 6550's just sound better

Definitely gonna try some 6550's in the Twin Jet. I tried to drop these in but the bias range was too limited. It is a small range on the TJ as opposed to the Shiva. And, I couldn't be arsed with soldering a bias resistor in right now as I was interested in playing, not tech'n!

They are about 450 at idle current on the screens if I remember, the 6550's. Anyway, its all good. Nothing smoking yet.
