first it’s not my amp. Second-guy is selling it for 300…third- it powers on and will not come off standby…. Any idea what is up? Get it or leave it alone? I think these have a green and red light denoting power and standby… red light comes on but not the green…..

IMO .... it could be a few different things .... I would need to get in there with a Multimeter to hash that problem out ...

I’m tempted but I will probably pass. I’m reading that it could be a fuse issue…mainly the fuse holder possibly failing. I’m not equipped to handle it though. My knowledge of electronics is throw away and get another.

it could be that .... or some major stuff .... like the transformer might be shit .... etc

His words-
I was playin on it then I lost all sound and when I went over to look at it, I still had power but the light below my standby switch was out.

I would have bought that so fast. 9 times out of 10 it's a simple issue that you can find with some poking and a multimeter.

Transformers are likely okay, I'd have scooped that. Risk was probably worth it.

Run forrest run.

Sounds like one of the internal fuses went. 5150’s aren’t powered by just external fuses. It likely needs to go to a tech to get resolved. I don’t think it’s a problem that should be attempted to be resolved by anyone else especially if it’s an older one.

Yep. This specific issue happened to my first 6505 1992 as well.

Not a "poking around with a multimeter" thing

Now I’m curious as to the problem because you experienced the same thing. I’ve never had this issue myself with mine.

5150/6505 are terribly made. All kinds of problems.

Maybe just the HT fuse blew? Might be some new power tubes or just a resistor from victory. I would go for it at $300 if I really wanted a 5150. Can’t think of much repair that would cost more than $3-400 and even with that, you’re at $6-700 which is still good these days for that amp and you would also know it’s good to go for quite some time.
If it’s local pickup I would pull the chassis and see if there’s any charred spots near the power tubes. If no visible damage I would feel a lot better about giving it a go. Might just be a bad Standby switch?

Tempted to low ball him even more. I can get a functioning 60 watt combo 6505+ for about $350 though. Never owned one before.

This is where I'd be at but I don't mind poking around inside of amps. You could even go a step further and take some proper fuses with you and swap on the spot if local pickup.

PS: I never owned one (would like to) but I had always heard these were built like tanks :dunno:

The originals were built just fine. One of the main points of failure I think was a transfer point of power on a ribbon cable.
