I'm currently running =C= KT88 in mine an like them a lot, I did that mod cause I'm usually not a fan of el34 (haven't tried the el34L though).
Now that I'll have to retube soon I had a look at the =c= prices and decided I can't and dont want to afford another quad of =C= KT88.
Since I'm usually a fan of 6L6 I thought I should perhaps try some 6ca7 in the uberschall, has anyone done that?
If so, which ones, EH?
How do they compare to el34l in there?
Or should I try the el34l?
I'm usually not a fan of el34 because of there pronounced mid range and the harsh sound in the high mids.

That's the one tube I've not tried in either Überschall. It'd be interesting to see what it does to the bottom end.

Damn, I hoped you'd have some experiences to share.
I've you don't like the KT88 in it anymore? Why's that?

To be fair, I've only tried the Sovtek KT88, which I really don't like. I find it muddy and flubby. I'd like to try some JJs or Winged C, but I can't afford them.

Why don't you pick up a used quad of 6CA7s for cheaper, see how you like it, and if you don't just sell them?

yeah, that's probably what I'm gonna do.
I really like the =C= KT88, but the price is just rape

Yep. I've only tried Winged C EL34s, and while they were nice, they weren't worth the extra price. I really want to try the JJ KT88s in my Twin Jet and Rev 2. Somehow I think the compressed bottom end will mellow out some of the low end of the Überschalls.

I just put e34l's in my rev 2 and I like them much more than the el34's. Thats as far as I have gotten on mine with tube swapping. So I have no means of comparision to your new tubes, but it was a big improvement.

Yep. I really didn't like standard JJ EL34s in there. I have the E34Ls in my Rev 2, much better.

I tried some EH 6CA7's in a Quickrod this week and greatly preferred Ruby BSTR's. The EH's sounded good but the amp sounded a lot cleaner overall with more headroom but it lost it's grind. I was surprised at the difference. I would like the EH's in a cleaner sounding amp but for a high gain amp (at least in the case of the QR) I did not care for them.

just put the EH6ca7 into my Uber, and I gotta say I like them so far.
the bottom end goes a tiny little bit less deep than with the =C= KT88 (which actually is a good thing on this amp)..
compared to the KT88 the 6ca7 are a bit less "HiFi" sounding, highs don't go quite as high and lows not quite as low, the mids are a little creamier.

I'll compare the 6ca7 to the JJe34L tomorrow and will see which ones sound better.

and while it was open anyways, I just installed the el34/KT88 bias switch...in case I wanna go back to the KT88 at some point

so, now I've just compared the e34l directly to the EH6ca7.
both tubes are sounding good, but overall I definitely perfer the EH6ca7.
the e34l have nice crunchy low mids, but sound "messier" and also more brittle in the mids than the 6ca7.
the 6ca7 have a lot of clean punch and are extremely tight and very balanced overall.
the e34l sound more "raw" and in your face, but not as rounded as the 6ca7, and somewhat harsher in the mids.
the 6ca7 is an overall smoother sounding tube, which IMO goes more nicely with the modern Uber sound....I'll rather be using the e34l in one of my marshalls I think.
the 6ca7 is indeed closer to a 6L6 sounding, it seems.

I had them both biased at 28mA (tried different values, but but 28 seemed to be magical)

Nice! Sounds like a more manageable EL34. I'll have to try it someday!
