A 2024 story: Crazy neighbours asked me about the guitar sounds coming out of my apartment

So just about a month or two ago, I was walking back towards my apartment when I saw two of my neighbours - a husband amd wife - outside their unit.

I just continued towards my door when I realised they were about to communicate with me. "Shit," I thought, "they're going to complain about the noise I make when I play guitar and drums."

I said hello politely and thought I could avoid an unpleasant situation by getting inside my house and closing the door.

And then came the question: "Do you play guitar?"

What should I do? Tell the truth? Lie? My mind was racing. This could be the end of all the fun I'd been having with tube amps.

I said, "Yes," and braced myself for a scolding.

And then the couple was air guitaring and saying stuff like "Woah, dude, you play Metallica" and "keep playing".

I was careful not to let my relief show and thanked them for the compliment. Turns out that their daughter has been learning guitar and finds my music interesting.

I bump into them from time to time and exchange hellos and this diwali we gave them some sweets and exchanged wishes.

It's a great arrangement because we own our unit and they own theirs and there's only one other unit on our floor that's much further away and they haven't said anything.

So now, in the words of John Tardy from Obituary, "I don't care/I'll do what I want" 😂

I had thought about a home inside city limits somewhere but the thought of not being able to duty test loud amps at any hour of the day put an end to that thought. There is a lot to love about city life but I like country living more. Starry nights, bonfires, shooting guns and deer out back, and hang my wash on a line to dry. I like having wood heat and rural land usually means plenty of firewood to cut. It's less plush but the privacy and space is nice.

I've always dreamt of seeing the American countryside, but given that I'm dangerous behind the wheel and I doubt an Uber would take me to the places I want to go, I'll probably never get around to doing it.

Yeah, I'm going down to the cornfields,
I'll be there at just around midnight,
You see the devil, I'm going there to meet him,
We're supposed to make a pact under the pale moonlight

My momma always told me the devil won't deal with you, boy,
He'll take all that you have and take you for a ride,
And so that big mean old devil he just kept talking and talking,
And I just kept asking for more and more and more in my mind

And when he asked me to swear on my blood to give him my soul,
I just stared vacantly at that old man and said nary a word as one who knows,
And he swore and he cursed and he spat and he wept,
And then he smiled and we both giggled till the sun came up over our heads

Yeah, I'm going down to the cornfields,
I'll be there at just around midnight,
You see the devil, I'm going there to meet him,
We're supposed to make a pact under the pale moonlight

You're not in the states? I guess i naively assumed you were. Where you at?

hah I hear you man! i’ve been in apts nearly 10 years now. I used to have a lockout where I could crank amps, now it’s just my 4x12 at just above tv volumes. I’ve had only 1 complaint at a previous apt, and I was playing louder than normal haha.

Singapore. But I'm an Indian citizen.

Nice.

in the early '00s, I was part of an international team, and I did a lot of work in southeast Asia;

I worked in Singapore a few times, a month at a time, usually December, for about 4 years in a row... stayed at a hotel on Marina Bay it had two towers, could see the Merlion across the bay from my rooms; it was attached to a mall that had a Starbucks close to an underground subway station. I used to go to the East Coast Seafood mall with the local team for black pepper crab; and the open air food markets for tiger prawns...used to go a British pub on Boat Quay...the local team would also celebrate at what one person told me was the best Chinese restaurant in Singapore, with a 7+ course meal...and shark fin soup with the biggest pieces of shark fin I'd ever seen...

One time, I worked with a young guy from India, and he took me to many Indian restaurants; he was an occasional meat eater, and took me to a place he called "frontier food" - it was all different meats on large skewers roasted over open flames...

good times!
