A few questions about the Renegade....

Bought one this weekend and I love this thing. I've abandoned my ill fated digital route and went back to tube amps. I've missed them. Anyways, the Renegade is a fantastic amp. Aside from it's flexibility, it's crazy dynamic.....or maybe I've just been on digital for a little too long. Whatever, I'm glad to be back with a good tube amp and this thing is rocking. I'm actually fairly surprised more people don't talk about the clean channel. Some nice cleans and cool crunch are available in spades.

So, my questions....

1) The only thing I might miss with this amp is a more modern type, heavier tone. So I'm thinking a pedal into the clean channel. It doesn't have to be perfect....just adequate....it's not my primary sound. But I do like to jam out some Metallica riffs on occasion. I'm sort of considering a jekyll and hyde just to have an OD and distortion in one pedal. There are probably better options. What are some of your experiences with this? Any good recommendations?

2) I will most likely retire my trusty Legacy 4x12 and move to a 2x12. I have an Avatar that's ready to be loaded. My Legacy has two V30s and two G12Ms. I'm finding I'm not into the G12Ms with this amp and will just go with the two V30s for now. However, I'm interested in mixing a V30 with the Egnater Elite 80 (like the combo) or maybe the CL80, but I think I'll try and get a hold on the Egnater modded one. It seems many like this speaker and from its description, it's what I'm looking for. However, I don't want to go too smooth, so it seems a mix with this and a V30 may provide a nice balance. What are your thoughts on this? What other combination you've found that you like with the Renegade.

Thanks in advance for any replies, and great amp My Egnater!

a BB preamp in the dirty channel, will get you there, plus you'll have one of the nicest od pedals for the clean channel too

Thanks in advance for any replies, and great amp My Egnater!

I just bought a Fulltone OCD to use for overdriving the clean channel on a tube amp. I also own an Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-10 and the OCD just KILLS it. Very full tone. LOVE IT!. I use the OCD for blues, but it also can be used for heavy metal tones. I have my distortion channel already set for the heavy rock sounds tho.

Just go to You Tube and listen to some demo of overdrives. The Crunch Box sounds really cool too if you like British distortion. Well you must like it if you bought an Egnater.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm not necessarily looking for higher gain, I'm looking for a tonal change with a pedal into the clean channel that is more modernish. The blackstar HT distx has some cool clips...and some bad ones. Maybe modern american type distortion is a better description than just modern. Mesa-ish, I guess. Again, this doesn't have to be perfect or recreate a particular tone...just something in that genre. Just something passable.

Any thoughts on the Egnater Elite mixed with another type of speaker?

I have an older jekel & hyde which sounds killer on my practice amp, but I can't get a sound I like with it hooked up to my Renegade. What I do like is the Vox Saturater. By the way, I'm using the Egnager 4 x 10 cabinet.

Hmmm. How were you using it? Through the clean channel? Some amps just don't take pedals well, especially pedals that push it into areas it doesn't do....like a marshall doing american modern. That's why I'm trying to get some gauge of other's experiences.

Ever tried Wampler Pedals? I like 212 combos, and have a Renegade and a Tourmaster. Plenty of Wampler clips on Youtube. Gearmanndude has some recent stuff he posted of various Wampler drive units. You can see all the Wampler stuff at http://www.wamplerpedals.com. I do not work for or know them, except to have purchased one of their pedals......

So, I have a Wampler Pinnacle, which is billed as having a plexi brown-sound type of thing going for it. It definitely does, and I like it. It actually sounds better to me in the clean channel of the Tourmaster than the Renegade, but I am sure that is just my personal preference - you would have to try one to know. I don't think it does very well in the dirty side of an amp, but then again that is not what it was designed for.

So, also regarding Wampler, one of his latest pedals is called the Triple Wreck (gee, wonder what he was going for?). It's on my shopping list if I ever have any money again. Give it a listen on youtube. Definitely may fit the bill for the more modern sound you are attempting to create.

I should qualify my comments - I am one of these middle aged hobbyist guys that has played on and off for 25 years, so that may temper how you view my recommendations. I am not a professional....not even in the music industry. But I can also tell you that I usually prefer to get all my gain through the amp's pre and power tubes, and Wampler pedals really can give tube amp overdrive and distortion a run for the money.

Thanks rjdhmd. I listened to come clips of the wampler triple wreck. Not bad. Definitely on the list. :)

For any interested, I picked up a Blackstar HT Dist over the weekend. Works really nice into the clean channel. Can keep a great clean tone and hit the pedal for some heavy modern type tones. It's a 3 channel amp now with three rocking channels!

A gadget that many players don't think of using is a graphic equalizer in the series loop. The really big difference between all the different tones is primarily EQ. An equalizer in the loop can do some amazing things.

Couldn't agree more. I started using one w/ my Nova System on my Ceriatone 2555, and it is awesome! Allows me to get more use out the 2-channels I have...since they are both shared EQ.

I'm not sure and EQ would have done what I wanted it to. It's cool, I knew going into it I would be looking for some kind of pedal or something to give me that more modern type tone, but the clean channel and gain channel on the renegade were pretty sweet. No amp does it all, so I chose the Renegade as it does what it does very well and I primarily play with those types of tones.

Very cool amp. I love it.

Can you answer a question? The 2x12 cab has two Egnater Elites in it, wheres the 2x12 combo has one Egnater Elite and a V30. Why this particular mix of speakers? I'm very curious about the Elite. I know it's a slightly modified CL80, but I've no experience with these speakers at all. From what I have read though, I'm very interested in one. I love smooth, but don't want so smooth I lose bite. Any info you'd like to share?

BTW, the "My Egnater" in my first post was supposed to be "Mr. Egnater". :) Thanks!!!

Oh, and another question...I'm looking into some late night direct recording solutions (quiet). I would be cool with using an attenuator as load and either using the direct out of the amp or line out of attenuator and using IRs in the DAW.

What are impressions on running a Renegade with an attenuator set to load? Should I scratch that idea and go with something else or would the amp be fine?

Thanks

So, nobody has an opinion of the speaker that ships with the amp?

They sound like diarrhea being blown through wet cardboard. The speaker in my kids' Speak and Spell sounds better.

Maybe that will get a response. :D

I don't understand what you guys are talking about?
I just want to know about the Elite. I know it's slightly modified CL80, but I don't really know anything about that speaker either. I had asked about why the v30/Elite combo was chosen for the Renegade 2x12 combo. I'm considering this pair. I just wanted to get some opinions on this speaker or the CL80, or what combinations people favor with their Renegade and why. So far, it appears to be an opinionless speaker....which on the internet, is extraordinarily baffling. :)

And an attenuator? I've used an attenuator for years with my old Marshall with no problems I was aware of. The master on the Renegade works great and I don't need an attenuator for that. I'm looking for a direct recording solution (silently) and one option is using an attenuator as a load and using a direct out of an attenuator or of the Renegade. I don't know if this is okay for the Renegade or something to steer away from.

Just looking for advice and opinions.
