I don't know why I just realized this. Yeah, he is a solid rhythm guitar player but he is definitely the weakest link in Tool. Justin comes up with far more interesting shit than Jones.

Who?

Solid rythyms are very important in my opinion. Cases in point. Ron Wood, Malcom Young, (I can't believe I am going to say this...) James Hetfeild and the like allow the lead guy do do his thing without holding down the melody.

I think it's hard as hell to come up with stuff to fit that kind of rhythm section, so he gets respect from me. I just view it as different appreciations and expectations for different kinds of music... I don't expect Tool, Nirvana, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, or Thrice to all hit me the same way with the same skills. But, that's just my approach.

I suppose that you have a point considering Justin's basslines and the odd meter stuff. But it just seems that since Undertow, he hasn't really changed or done anything differently.

Adam Jones it the guitar player in Tool. I'm all about appreciating good rhythms but I suppose I have different expectations of Jones.

I hear ya, I'm normally a fan of bands progressing, but I frankly think Aenima was the top, now that's personal opinion. The newer stuff is nice to have some newer stuff to spin, but it's just that Aenima's such a cut above to me. I don't know if I wanna say they have a "formula" persay, definitely not as cut-and-dry as some pop-type stuff, which I'm not opposed to either; but, what they have going on works, and works well.

I also don't know if he has that much room to do a ton more... In that, with everything else going on in their songs, I think it could get clutter very fast if he tried to do too much more. Now, just a thought stemming from some experiences I've had having to go very minimal because of the other musicians; so, I could be projecting there for all I know.

But, as to not wholly disagree with you :), he definitely isn't fufilling the traditional guitar player/guitar hero roll; he's more of a great accent/added-dimension than the back bone of the band/song/riff.

Peace.

You're totally right on, and to take it an even further, I actually thought that was pretty obvious... He has no lead skills whatsoever, and he has said so himself.

But thats beauty of guitar, you dont have to be the most technically gifted musician to make good music IMO.

Some of our favorite musicians are on the opposite ends of the technically gifted scale, funny huh.

Telephant's got it in spades... I didn't know how Ownage a Superbass was in-person until I heard his. Definitely found where Adam was coming from.

"You bastards" is a bit of an over-statement... :) My only beef with the guy is some decent shit-talking about Stevie I read in a guitar mag. I've heard that kinda stuff from the Tool-only camp, and the like, but from someone that's aligning himself with blues and blues-related material... It was a bit of a mistake if looking for me to be a fan.

Basically, it's like when I realize who it is, there's this "doucebag" sign that goes off in my head, just distracts me from the music.

While he can't solo for shit, he is a technically gifted rhythm guitar player. He's like a metronome. I was complaining about his creativity with respect to the rest of the band. :D

Tools last CD puts me to sleep. But still, it's hard to be creative and come up with material that's going to sell albums. You could probably EASILY get any guitar player to learn Tools stuff and play a tour with them in place of Jones and Tool wouldn't miss a beat. But you can't replace him in the writing process of the band and another guitar player writing the material would probably screw it all up for them.

"Can't solo for shit" is really a bad way to put it. Some might say I cannot solo for shit cause I don't blaze up and down the neck, but others have told me my leads are better then a lot of the guys who just shred and shred because I put a lot of emotion into what I write. Just because he isn't shredding, doesn't mean his solos are horrible. Quite the contrary, I find many of them very interesting.

Just my $0.02

That is always THE most important thing.

The short little solo on Parabola is probably one of my all-time favorites of all guitar players.

In my opinion, he does exactly what is appropriate in context. A lot of "better" players have problems with this, so as far as I'm concerned, he's top notch.
