I know there was recently a topic on drum software, but I want to hear from anyone who has used either of the two mentioned or has compared both.

I will be ordering one of these this week, but I can't decide which will be better for me. My drummer and I will both be using the software to program drums for our demo. (hard rock/metal) but I will also be using it for ambient texture based shit on the side.(Karnivool, Thrice, Pumpkins, A perfect Circle etc..)

I like that the Slate drums can cop specific album sounds, like the Deftones albums, but I've heard that Addictive sounds more realistic in a mix?? Help!

SSD drums are famous, specially for drum replacement. I have not used their drum player program, and only heard a few demos. I wasn't that impressed with the demos. they sounded very nice, but I wasn't floored. I have no idea how it sounds in use. I do know that AD has worked really well for me. Probably not the go to for metal and heavy drums, but I think its capable. So if you are solely doing heavy stuff, maybe SSD would be better, or Superior 2.0?

But I am a happy camper with AD, they have add ons, not a ton, and a little slow at adding more stuff, but What they have added sound fantastic as well. I don't think Slate drums come with much, if any midi grooves to start.

For programming, Addictive Drums.

For sample-replacement, Steven Slate.

I think the Addictive cymbals are more realistic than the Slate cymbals, an in programming, that is the absolute most important part. You can always replace the kick, snare or toms later, but if you program with shitty, stiff sounding cymbals, then you're stuck.

YMMY, IMHO, all that. This is coming from several years of programming and engineering experience.

I have not tried Addictive or Slate, I use EZ Drummer with the DFH expansion and so far they have great sounding drums, as well as multi track mixing for good post mixing and it is easy to use with any DAW I have tried.

What are the pros/cons to the Addictive or Slate versus EZDrummer for those that have tried all 3?

Addictive drums was a HUGE step up from EZ drummer for me. I had the DFH, nashville, and maybe a few other expansions to EZ. Going back and listening to my clips that I used EZ, and now with AD, there is no comparison to me. EZ sounded more boxy, cymbals were harsher, and didn't sit as well in a mix, sounded more fake. AD to me sounds much more real and natural, less over processed and sits much better. I havn't used EZ since.

Thanks for the comparison, I will check out Addictive, sounds really nice!!

you bet, like I said, I think AD just comes off as more of a real mic'd kit, and allows you to dial in varying degrees of processing. EZ just comes off as over processed from the start and its hard to dial it out, in the end, it sounds smaller and less real imo

a good drummer and a real kit.
I have both of those, but recording a good drummer on a real kit is an artform in itself. ;) I'd rather have my drummer program his beats on great sounding software intead of having an shitty sounding recording. PLus, I have no access to studios anymore. Now when I lived in Minneapolis, that was a different story.

I love addictive drums....pretty easy, and the kits sound good. I wish XLN would add some more pro kits/drums soon.

YES! I do to. the jazz brush add on was amazing, and they have just released an electronic pack. But I really would like to get more drum options, perhaps something really geared towards hard rock / metal.
