Holy Shit!!!!!The Svetlana SV6550C is a massive sounding tube!Big bottom, thick fat mids and an absolutely singing high end.Very rich.I only got a chance to swing them threw the VX and SL2 and hands down the best those 2 have sounded and they all ready sounded killer!!!I played them with one 212 TM loaded with one Celestion G12T75 and the Eggie Elite 80...Why Oh Why did I buy an Mod 100

And Matt is going to say he wants 6550's in his Mod50 in

Well man...I'm glad you are happy with the 6550s. I absolutely love them. I've tried so many tubes in my lifetime, and I haven't found anything that comes close to the versatility of 6550s. If it's good enough for SRV (he used 6550s in his dumble amps) and Zakk Wylde (he uses them in his Marshall JCM 800 2203's) then they are good enough for me!

I still like using the TS 5881s and SED EL34's from time to time. Now add the YellowJackets too. Having those tubes and a Mod50 makes recording a lot of fun, because you can get different tones from each one, and that's a good thing! But for an all around good tube, that makes every module sound its best, I have to say the 6550s are probably one of the most versatile power tubes out there. The Svetlana's are by far my personal favorite in the class of 6550s.

Glad you are digging them!

Eric

totally agree.

There's a good reason I'm running 6550's in my 2150, TBR-2SL, and Seminar Head.

Any problem running these in an RT2/50? The 6550 is in essence a slightly larger 6L6 right?
thanks

Circuit wise yes...physically no.

Really, is the resistor going into the bias pot not the right size to bias a set of 6550s? Or is the trannie not powerful enough to handle a 6550? Just curious.

I was confused too. I thought he meant it just wouldn't fit in the 2/50 case.

Darn you guys.....I've got about 6 sets of power tubes........just what I need, more temptation for more power tubes......

So Eric! I am limited with my experience swapping tubes but I do know I love the british EL34 vibe more that the fender vibe. When I swapped to el34 from 5881's in my mod 50 it really hit the spot for me with the Vox/SL.
With that said, will going to 6550s still keep the El34 vibe and give it even more goodness to the tone? or ?

that probably sounds like a real Noob question but I dont want to lose the cool vibe I now experience with the EL34s!

Jason, you like the Svetlana 6550s over the Tung Sol 5881s?
So far ,yes  It could be one of the best tubes I've thrown in there yet,but I have to give it the EG5 test threw the 212s to be sure, but the SL2 with the 212TM was HUGE,and so full sounding !!I kinda all ready know where this is going   Those 6550s are fucking big ass tubes and I mean big ass tubes

So i cant use them in my RT2/50? That sucks,i was ready to buy a pair for the new M4 coming in the mail. No possible way they fit? someone needs to make an offset plug between the tubes and amp.any mod that would work?

So i guess i should buy a VHT 2902 0r 2502 or ??? do they fit in the VHT's?

I won't say that a 6550 sounds like an EL34 or 6L6... But it does have a warm buttery midrange that reminds of EL34's, but with a bigger, punchier bottom end, and a more "sparkley" top end. A big difference between 6550s and EL34s / 6L6s is the headroom. Where you really need to get the EL34's juiced in volume to get the desired tones, 6550s have a high headroom, that really sounds good at all volumes. That said, they do sound better at higher volumes as the tubes get pushed, but they don't change drastically in tone like EL34s do from going from soft to loud. I've been using 6550s for years, and have not found a better tube for power sections than it. My favorite at this point is the Svetlana 6550s.

But, I do like to have EL34s and 5881s and THD Yellowjackets w/ EL84s on hand to be able to get other tones too. But as far as a "jack of all trades" killer sounding for all types of music power tube, there's nothing better than a 6550 in my opinion. If it was the choice for SRV in his dumbles, and Zakk Wylde in his JCM800s, then it's good enough for me!!
