I have in my IV...

V1: Tung Sol Reissue
V2: JJ High Gain
V3: Chinese 9th Gen
V4: Chinese 9th Gen
V5: Chinese 9th Gen

Now, I'm always looking for more thickness, and I love dark tones. I see some people have found the JJ harsh. I've never come across this personally, but I'm always interested in trying new things. What would you recommend for slot v2? Something that is equally "high gain" but different in flavour perhaps?

I thought this award went to the NOS RFT ECC83?

I will agree here. One of them strategically placed will work wonders for that. More than one and things get too dark/thick.........at least from my experience.

JJ's harsh ??? Don't think harsh is a word I'd ever use to describe JJ preamp tubes.

Have you tried your Tung Sol in V2 and your JJ in V1 ?

I put some KT-66 {they are bigger than the 6550 or Kt-88 I have} power tubes in my IV about 3 weeks ago. I was surprized about how much bigger/thicker it sounded. Tones of LOW END. I have not had a chance to turn them up much. But so far they they sound bigger and better than any thing else in the amp. Clean to higain.
