And is now considered "Classic Rock".
Feel old yet ?

I don't think it's considered "classic" but I guess it depends on who's pigeon-holing it.

Classic rock to me? Era specific - 70/80s - Van Halen / AC-DC / LynyrdSkynyrd / yada yada
For me AIC / Nirvana / Soundgarden / STP - grunge 90s, maybe under the umbrella of "alternative"
80s hair metal - exactly as it sounds

I really have no skin in the game, but calling AIC "Classic Rock" leaves a big "?" as to where the other aforementioned bands would fall, let alone the truly TRULY classic originators like, I dunno, Sabbath, Cream, Uriah, Rush, BoC, etc etc etc. Then there was glam - KISS - etc.

Ya, AIC ain't classic rock, although they are a class act :p?

I like Alice and have some connections, but for me Sweet Water with Dudley Taft is my number one from that Era followed by Mother Love Bone .
The solo on the Sweet Water song Sleep is epic !
Or I should sat both of them !
Dudley Taft was way underrated!

You musta been a PNW local to throw down Taft's name - KICK ass shows!! And MLB....?!?!?! Hell, they practically gave PJ their start and were the reason for Temple to happen.

Epic bands - you gotta be a local to know these names :2thumbsup:

Classic Rock is basically the polite way of saying Dad Rock.

Well, that also falls under the whole Seth Rogan'esque "Dad Bod" thing which I also don't subscribe to.

To me, rock'n'roll, or "contemporary music" (when compared to genres such as jazz, classical, etc) should be categorized by era, and after that maybe genre. It's the only thing that makes sense. If AIC in "classic rock", what's Aerosmith? I think of "Dad Rock" as Bob Seiger, Bruce Springsteen, Pickleneck/Nickelback, etc. - I'm a "dad" - and I listen to everything from 2Pac to Deadmau5 to Jefferson Airplane to Gorjira to NIN and Manson to Steven Wilson to DuaLipa/LindseyStirling/LadyGaga back to Getoboys to Metallica to SmashingPumpkins to Garbage to U2 to SexPistols to Nirvana, then way over to reggae, Ozomatli, and a whack of Latin and international music - all of the aforementioned in equal doses of exposure (PS: the DuaLipa/KatyPerry/ChristinaPerry/Stirling thing is mostly for commercial overdubs/performance pieces I produce upon request)

It's a fun topic. I think eras break down the music the best - but there'll *always* be the standouts:
- 1968 Zeppelin, Deep Purple & Black Sabbath were formed, all went their own separate ways
- The Doors, nothing sounded like them in their era
- Punk, still alive and strong today
- 60s, pschedelic rock, folk, art-rock (I still love LSD, just sayin)
- 70s, all the greats, but PinkFloyd goes where?
- 80s, anything BUT the lipstick/hairspray shit...horrible decade for real music, but the start of some alternative
- 90s, grunge & industrial & alternative
- 2000, rave/EDM really took hold

But where can anyone place bands like the Stones, Zep, Floyd, Doors, Beatles, Genesis/Yes/KingCrimson, Rush, Sabbath - they along with a few others are completely outside of any categorization.

Awesome topic!! Been working in a group project for past couple months (covid/crazy idea) - some of the questions posed by the "pros" in this group really got me thinking and all of us - some hobbyists, some totally pro musicians, some arena/stadium world renowned names, producers, etc - are totally loving the "content" of what's being discussed and dissected. What makes a great song sound good? Is it the sound of the song or the melody - if you had to pick just one - which would be the most desirable; why is "personal core tone" as a guitarist so important and what should your tone be able to do? Formulaic radio-friendly shit - yes, it's money making - but is it in the production or the familiarity of notes used? What makes [enter song here] interesting to [each of us] - dissect, discuss.

Amazing project, loving it.

/end rambling

And PS: I'm well into middle-aged, a father of 2, and ripped/fit like nobody's business... So, no "DadBod" here

GODDAMN STRAIGHT I missed TheWho - I was going to throw them into the "where do these guys" fit category of "non-categories" - good call, I mean it, they were in my roster of "another uncategorizeable band" (and that's likely not a real word, but you get it).

"Tommy" - full album - no lies - playing RIGHT now on my upper floor soundsystem. Go figure!!
