I recall this story well minus the murder mystery-btw of course it was the other kid who did it. Sad for alexi. The one thing that sticks out… he chose the path of music and “skipped school” to practice all the time. I personally was not bold or confident enough with life at that age to gamble all my eggs in the one basket of being a musician. He could have easily been an unknown gear head living in his parent’s basement delivering pizzas and making fun people’s tone on RT. EVH did the exact same thing-skipped school to play guitar. Maybe that’s all it takes and start early in life, like 5 years old.
Also of note. He holds his guitar like zakk wylde. The neck is almost parallel to his upright body. I wonder if that reduces tension on his right hand picking and makes it easier to manipulate the fretboard from the left hand. Thoughts from you guys who play this way?

I'm going to make this all about me, so bear with me lol.
I was really bummed when i heard he died. I knew about his problems, and had similar problems at the time, so it was a mirror moment. He was only a few years older than me. So sad he couldn't get clean and keep COB together. they had serious chemistry and were so fun live.
This show was short, and i was drunk as fuck at it, but i remember it so well amazingly, and it was one of my favorite shows i ever saw. Alexi was just on fire at this show. I think i counted their keyboard player drank like 4 beers while they played this 30 minute set. I'm surprised he didn't die too.

I think someone would have to be completely convinced of their innate talent, a megalomaniac about their talent, or just plain crazy to go all in; but many successful creators had no plan B, and had a singular focus and drive that many don't have.

there are probably many unknown stories of those who followed the same path but didn't have the skills, drive, talent, etc. to find success. I know a few musicians that could have made it, some I was in bands with, but for whatever reason they didn't make it, aged out, got sidetracked in life (kids, addiction, injuries, etc.)

I saw them in Atlanta playing with Lamb Of God, Thine Eyes Bleed, Mastodon, and Slayer. Alexi missed a few notes here and there, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't 100% sober, but they still kicked serious ass and he was having a blast on stage. That was a very very good show, especially since I got to see it for free.
