The bassist was arrested last month for alleged drug possession.
Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr – who has publicly struggled with drug addiction and appeared on VH1's Celebrity Rehab last year – has died. He was 44.

"It's a terrible shock and tragedy," his father tells TMZ.

Starr was arrested and jailed for alleged drug possession in Salt Lake City, Utah, last month. Police pulled him over and found he was in possession of six Xanax pills and six painkillers called Opana.

One of the two arresting officers reported that Starr readily identified himself. "Hey officer, have you heard of Alice In Chains? I used to be the bass guitarist for them. We are down here in Utah . . . putting together a new band," he told police, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. (A court date had not yet been set.)

In a sad twist, Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley died from mixture of heroin and cocaine in 2002.

What a shame.......
I watched that series of Celeb rehab with him on it.

Oh man...talk about horrible news. RIP Mike :(

5% of cats heavily messed up ever get 'completely out' alive.

Sad indeed.

I'm still not over Laynes death and the total and complete waste of talent is was!!!

R.I.P He should of stopped the drugs and gotten his life turned around.

Not surprised

You can not help those that do not want to help them selves

Dude was a total dick bag on celebrity rehab..

goddammit! I thought he'd turned the corner... his father shouldn't be talking at all. The asshole was in a car smoking crack with Mike in the intro of that rehab show... how his father would find this a "shock" is beyond me...

Steve

It's always sad to see someone lose the fight. RIP.

On a personal note, Dirt was a killer CD, was listening to it earlier today. He had some kickass bass lines on it and his tone was badass.

Bummer.
But that dude had too many birds on his antennae.
He was Cro-Magnon tweaked.
His death was probably the best thing for him.

He wasn't exactly carrying the mother load of drugs there either, to be arrested. Damn shame though, and very young.

Steve

thats sad news , damn..2 from one band...the sad fact is that if 5 out of 100 addicts in treatment stay clean ,then they consider that successful statistically

On the money. I saw that scene, too.

The "father" or stepfather (can't remember which) was a complete dirtbag. He really should STFU

Always sad to see someone lose the battle with drums. May Mike RIP....
