Pretty much Layne's band and none of the other guys. Wonder what happened, if he split from them all and kept the name, owned the name. Weird how he even kept the name after a total overhaul. Most don't.

wow, from that to no teeth, diapers and dead in a short period of time. That must have been a serious run on his drug of choice.

Well... what have you got? - Layne

Seriously though, it's great to see a vid from the days when AIC really kicked ass! Wonder how Layne got so depressed with all those screaming chicks around all the time?

1986-2002. 16 years isn't that short a time period. But still, another sad chapter in heroin addiction...

His dad was nowhere to be seen...until he made it. Then, he only showed up to borrow money or get drugs from Layne. Easy to see where he may have had some issues....too bad he wasn't able to deal with the demons.

Wow, I knew about pantera, but not about Alice in chains. Nice hair Layne. Wish he was still around, Alice in Chains is just not the same without him.

We'll, I think that band's name was "Alice 'n Chains," and they changed it to "Alice in Chains." HUGE difference.

I've been a HUGE Alice in Chains fans since Facelift.....I guess this vid illustrates my ignorance about a band I really truly love.....ignorance is bliss sometimes :aww:

Yup, back when Layne was doing the hair metal thing, the band was called "Alice 'N Chainz" , and the only member of the AiC we know was Layne.

Layne was actually a drummer (in high school) before he was a lead vocalist. Apparently, he didn't feel he was a good front man, so he played drums instead. The singer in the band he was in left, so he started singing while playing drums, and then eventually went to full time front man when he auditioned to be the singer in a hair metal band called "Sleze", which would eventually become the "Alice 'N Chainz" in the OPs video after some lineup changes.

Layne met Jerry at a rehearsal studio that Alice 'N Chainz and Jerry's band at the time were both using. Layne also lived there, IIRC, and Jerry ended up living there with Layne after they became friends. Alice 'N Chainz broke up, and Layne started singing for a funk band. The funk band needed a guitar player, so Layne asked Jerry to join. Jerry said he would join only if Layne also joined his band, which consisted of Jerry, Mike Starr, and Sean Kinney. Layne joined, and the band became the "Alice in Chains" we all know.

I'm writing this from memory, so I might be off on a couple things here and there.

Thanks for sharing the video, very cool  It's amazing to see how much showmanship goes into playing live. Being a part of that scene required a much different attitude, behavior, and wardrobe. People tend to forget that live music is an entertainment business just like any other, and has a lot of acting involved.

That was pretty cool to see. Highlights just how big a departure from the status quo Alice IN Chains was.

Thanks for the info. A lot of that is new to me.

Well, Glam certainly ran in the family.... Here is Jerry's pre-Alice band (Jerry far left, of course):

Wow I wonder what made them change, music styles
The hair metal stuff was before Jerry Cantrell was in the band. What became Alice in Chains was the result of Jerry's writing, along with the rest of the Seattle scene at the time. Early Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Green River, The Melvins, Nirvana.
