Amp background noise/Hum/hiss and recording

Hello all,

How much background noise do you find acceptable when recording guitar? I find that if I isolate my tracks, even on the clean channels, I can hear the background hiss of the amp. If I am using the built in recording on the amp and bypass the speaker cabinet, there is zero hum or hiss that can be heard. The point of this project is to mic multiple speakers for clean, crunch, and drive, so direct recording is the opposite of what I am wanting to do. If I put the amp into low power mode, the sound is basically non-existent, but when you have it on the full 25w, it is there. I know it's a 25w tube amp and it is pretty darn loud, even at volume on 3-4. Maybe this is just a standard tube amp standby noise/hiss. It can increase with the volume knob/pots but not really, there is always an idle noise.

The sound is very, very low overall as far as that goes but still, just curious what is an 'acceptable' level of hiss or hum from an amp on a clean setting. What do other channels do? When I listen to 'unedited' speaker comparison videos, even when I know they have to have hiss from the amp, I don't hear it.

I do not have drums or anything else on the tracks, as I wanted the speaker comparisons to just be direct guitar tones. I am guessing the sound just overtakes the hiss in the environment and that's why it isn't heard on the other speaker demos I've checked out? Maybe I have this cranked higher than is even reasonable and am being too picky?

I may have to record some clips to upload here to see if the background noise is acceptable or not.

I tried using my DAW to basically rate the dB readings at different points but man is that time consuming, especially if you roll in different tubes to achieve a quiter sound.

Anyway, any advice or knowledge is appreciated. I know I never worried about this when I was a studio guitarist and the tracks always came out great sounding, I never even thought about hiss, though it was surely there.

I have to use a healthy amount of noise gating on every guitar track I record because my house is ancient and not properly grounded so my signal to noise ratio is crazy

It's annoying but it is what it is

Like you said it's mainly only an issue in the space between the notes

If it involves a tube there will be noise. Some buzz or hum while others may snap, crackle and pop. How people perceive and tolerate noise is individualistic. Maxipreamp II was the best tool I found for this. Noise test for measuring and audio outputs for listening.

I should go look at studio set ups but I've been reading a lot of hifi forums lately and looking at their approaches to noise and vibration management to see how far I can push it. I couldn't tell you where to begin but there's a wealth of information out there that is relatable. Seen some wild ideas out there related to dampening and isolation that I want to experiment with.

I could only hope to be able to add a Maxi to my setup. I definitely want one, for all of the obvious reasons, but can't get one, for all of those obvious reasons as well.

I do not own a Maxipreamp II or any other tube tester. I borrow equipment like that from a friend for a day here or there and I'm very fortunate to be able to do that. What I've learned is there's a lot of guys out there into ham radios, hifi, guitars amps, etc. who are willing to help out and really want to talk about their gear. Might have to pay a couple of bucks to get some tubes tested and I don't think that's unfair for someone offering a service like that. Might be an option to consider and see what you think of it before diving in. Totally get where you're coming from on the cost of it though.

That makes sense. I didn't even consider sending them off or finding someone local-ish to run tests for me. I may even know an amp tech that has the proper tester. Good advice.

I have trust issues so I wouldn't recommend shipping them because of shipping issues and bait and switch. Not saying I've had or heard that experience but just paranoid. If you live in a city of 50K there's probably some people around with that kind of gear. If you got dozens of preamp tubes laying around I'd strongly recommend finding someone with a Maxipreamp II if you can. You can test a tube accurately and quickly and write down the measurements in about 2 minutes each. Maxipreamp II... noise test and audio outputs... just saying :D Sorry but I really love that piece of gear.

I've been wanting to get one since I got into the NOS tube game several years ago. It's definitely a gear dream to have one!!
