Amps that haven't been turned on for a long time - Variac: recommended if possible or absolutely necessary?

I would not worry at all. Just turn them on and let them warm up for awhile.

I swear one of the Tone Talks, Dave F mentions having vintage amps that sit around for spells and using a variac to bring the amp slowly back up to power.
Re-forming (?) the caps?
I cant remember the term he used off hand...
