I got a good deal on a pair of UK made v30s yesterday. my current 1960a is stock with all g12-75's. thinking about putting the v30s in an x pattern or both 30s on the bottom.
is it true that if you x pattern 75s and v30's that the v30s are so much louder that they take over what you hear? or is that just "numbers on paper" (97db vs 100db), and they actually blend nicely. i've read a little of each from googling. its been eons since i've x pattern'ed speakers, so i really don't remember what i liked or didn't like. I want to try and avoid swapping around speakers twice.

I have a 4x12 cab with G12-75's and WGS Retro 30's in an X pattern. WGS Retro 30 to me is like a V-30 without the ear fatiguing upper mid spike. I hear a good blend of the speakers. The Retro 30's fill in what the G12-75's lack in mids. Since the Retro 30's don't have as harsh of an upper mid response as the V-30's they may blend a little better.

You already have the V-30 and it's not that hard to swap things around, just takes some time. I suggest try them out in all the different configurations and see for yourself. Top & bottom or X pattern usually gives better blend than side by side. I think it's usually better to place the more efficient speakers on the bottom when mixing as top & bottom. As always YMMV.

I put the speaker with more bass on the bottom.

I've tried that with T-75's and V30's in a single cab, and it didn't quite work. It almost sounded like the bottom slots of the cabs were empty. JME.

that was all the rage for awhile back in the HCAF days. I say go for it. I've had a few mesa halfback's with mc's and ev's that were killer. Also had a Randall Ian sig cab with 2 v30's and one ev 15" that was killer also.

I’ve tried the 75s on top as well as X and I slightly preferred it in X pattern. It’s true that the 75s weren’t as loud but they still offered something I enjoyed to the overall sound.

In an X pattern the V30’s are heard louder IME, but still a good sounding blend. Not sure how it would be with one on top and other on bottom. Just gotta try and see what you think. Like others said, I usually prefer more powerful or bass-y speakers on bottom, but there can be exceptions. Gotta try different combinations and see what you’re ears like best. One pair being a lot louder than the other blended is not always a bad thing. If it sounds good it is good
