Another dead EL34 set!

Well another EL34 set dies on me tonight. I heard this humming which got louder till I finally removed the TS EL34s. Back to JJ E34Ls for now.

Is the problem with EL34 reliability also hold true for E34Ls and KT77s????

We did get a bunch of JJ EL 34 BHRs that look good. It's been stated by us and many others it doesn't matter which brand they are all unreliable.

Rich, I know that you and me are the last two holding on to the EL34s... but I might make the switch to 5881s.



I know its crazy, but I just gig too much to keep taking this risk with the EL34s.

Man, that is weird about EL34's. I have used SED Wingfoot EL34's for the longest time and never any issues!

I've said it before...
GT E34L. Never had a problem with them in the 4 years I've been using them.

This really bites. I love the tone of EL34s. I just had a pair that was blowing my amp. Had to toss them.
Now I have some new 6L6's and some older mesa EL34's and it sounds great.
Not as good as a quad of EL34's but its good enough. Hopefully some GOOD new EL34s will start to make it in the system.
Until then I avoid them. Such a pain ripping my amp apart to replace fuses.

Might? Nick... dude... last week was the second time you preferred the sound of 5881s head-to-head with your EL34s. You have a romantic fascination with EL34s that you will not let go even when you yourself preferred the tone both times we put our amps next to each other AND 5881s are way more reliable. Why is this a tough decision at all?

I agree Matt. There was a clear difference in tone between the 5881 and the EL34. The 5881s were so much sweeter, warmer, clearer, and much less harsh than the EL34s. I agree, I think this is a no-brainer!

Rich, the problem I think is that its often hard to tell unless you are doing an exact side by side comparison. Nick's rig sounds pretty good as it is with the EL34s, I mean its still a MOD 50. But that same rig next to mine with Tung Sol 5881s and its a night and day difference.

I dont understand Nick's continued resistance to swapping his tubes. But actually its fine with me if he likes his rig getting spanked by mine at every gig!
