Another good clean module?

Hey guys,

I have been using the Bassman for a while now. I am thinking of trying to find something a little different for an alternate. Maybe something that is super clean on A and B or with a little grit...or something like the BMan where I can have clean on A and dirt on B. Any advice? Maybe the T\D or Vox?

I might even consider one of the Randall cleans if I can mod it. I know I would only have one channel but this would still work fine if and when I get an E2! :)

I have all 3 (Bman, T/D, and VX) in my M4 and I find that they all cover different ground. The T is super clean, and the D breaks up nicely (though I find that the more gain it has the less it cuts through - not that it gets muddy, it just seems to lose that fender twangy edge a bit). The VX Ch A can go from quite clean to quite dirty, and retains the vox 'chime' at any setting, and the VX B is quite gainy - and stays tighter than I would have expected (i.e., enough to use it for quite gainy rock tones - think Brian May). I think I prefer the VX to the T/D in terms of 'it sounds soooo amazing I can't believe it's a module . . . ', but the T/D still gets tons of use for when I need Fendery twang (and for anything I need super-clean I use the T). You can't go wrong with either of them, IMHO.

Eric? He had one. I only had teh single channel way back. It was very capable of getting a really cool bighting lead tone with the gain up and an overdrive in front. Clean boost it and it does a spectacular loud clean. I used to use that module to play Eric Johnson's SRV, which was a bitch to play live, so I quit, but it had teh tone big time. Big bright, boosted Fender. It was of my favorite modules and I mentioned it becasue I really wanted to by Aeroic's (Eric) when he sold his, no $$$. It's still on my must have list along with a SL2X.

I don't see the Deluxe listed on the Eggie site. Did they make a two channel model?

I like the T/D. T is very clean even with the drive cranked and D with the drive cranked breakes up and stays warm with a strat. Put a Maxon OD808 in front and it will hit the early AC/DC easily. It is very pedal friendly.

The COD does a very nice Gilmour/SRV clean and Ch B gets very dirty, like Comfortably Numb.

I have the VX but don't really use it much but it does Petty and May very well.

I thought so, somebody hep me out here, was I imagining that?

They can and still will do the dual Twin, dual DLX, and T/D. I personally prefer the Dual Twin and Dual DLX to the T/D.

The DLX has some really cool naturally compressed tones (ala a Fender DLX) that's spank and tight. The Dual Twin really does sound the most like my old Fender Twin I used to have. Can totally get that "Eric Johnson" super clean sparkly tone. I just plain love it to death.

I have my BMAN modded to be a bit closer to the SL2X as far as the upper mids, which is awesome too. I run the bass at noon, mids at 2 oclock, and treble at 10 oclock, and both gain around 2 oclock. I can get some really cool overdriven clean tones on ChA...and a really cool Plexi vibe on ChB. For me, it's voiced where I would want it, and its tighter on the low end. Take that, add some verb and delay...and you get some KILLER tones out of it. I personally never bonded w/ the stock BMAN...but this one...is killer. Played it a lot on Saturday, and its jus amazing.

But for sparkly clean tones...I'd go for the Twin, DLX, or VX. They all can do it to differing degrees. DLX gets "dirtier" on ChB vs the Twin. ChB of the VX is more like ChB of the BMAN...you can get some great gain out of it.

The Vx will definitely not be "super clean" with any moderately hot humbuckers.

Not so much the case when using 5751 in V1 of the module. It won't get "Twin" clean...but it does a pretty very slightly dirty clean.

5751 in V1 really helps clean up ChA.

Yeah I forgot to mention - I also run 5751s which I really like in the cleaner modules (and it does decrease gain).

As for pups, "moderately hot humbuckers" wouldn't be my first choice for very clean on any module (or on almost any amp for that matter), just like a stock SSS strat through a Fender HRD wouldn't be my first choice for tight high-gain metal tones.

CH A of my VX module really likes teles, gretsches, and my P90-loaded Basone SG . . . I suspect that a rickenbacker would mate quite nicely with it too . . .

Yep...agreed...VX sounds awesome with those guitars / pickups.

Maybe so, but my point was mostly aimed at rock guys who are looking to gig with just 2 modules whose main tone is dirty. In that case, youd probably be using some type of humbuckers and the Vx would not be your best choice for a "super clean" module; the T/D would.

The fact is that the Vx is the "clean" module with the least clean headroom, so I dont usually recommend it for someone looking for something "super clean." I do love it though, and Id really like to try it with a 5751 as Im liking a SLIGHT BIT of grit on my cleans these days.

The VX does have more clean headroom w/ the 5751. Makes it closer to that "super clean" tone...but nothing approaching the Twin.

Eric, I would be curious to hear the details of your BMan mod! Was it a few cap values? Which caps?

I think this would be a heck of a lot easier if I had an E2. With the Mod 50 I use the clean for both clean and JTM45 tones so the BMan it is. When I got the Mod 50 I remember comparing to a Deluxe module and preferred the BMan.

However, it would be cool to have a super clean on channel A like a Twin or Deluxe and Bassman dirty on B! The Vox looks killer too.
