So I just put 4 6550's in my Herbert along with 2 el34's.
After having all el 34's in the amp I'm not so sure I like this set up.
I've only played it for an hour or so but the amp seems to have a lot more fizz even with the mid cut off.
Seems like I've lost a lot of the mids that the amp had.
I have it biased at 70ma
I'm going to try just 2 6550's tomorrow with 4 el34's.

Any suggestions?

no one here likes this but just try all 6l6s, every one says no here but seriosly try it...before all 6l6 haters arrive

I'm sending the 6550's back today.
I'm going to try mixing the kt88's with the el34's.

interesting. i thought the total opposite when i switched from EL34s to 6550s.

Some interesting tube facts....

The EL34BHT is a Shuguang EL34B tube. They are OK, but nothing great.

The 12AX7AC5+, it's a generic Chinese tube selected for high-gain. Nothing exceptional but high-gain players often do like Chinese preamp tubes so that works.

when my the first pair of original tubes went on me i threw in a pair of kt-88 with 4 ruby el34
was very good tone the kt-88's in there gave it a little more chunky sound

Your posts about the 6550's are what got me curious about using them.
I've heard some of your recordings and love the tones you have, but the 6550's just didn't do it for me. My Herbert is an '06 I believe. maybe that makes a difference.
I'm starting to think maybe the vh4 is what I really need. I like a lot of mids and the 6550s seemed to kill them.

you will never be happy. a long money trail awaits. At least you have the greatest amp in the universe!
