I should give you my background so you take it for what it's worth.
I'm in no way a guitar guru. I have very little experience with guitars. I've owned 4 in my life and my 12 years of guitar playing.
Gibson 85' LP Custom
Gibson 00' LP Studio
A crappy Agile (lowest model. Played great but sounded god awful)
Gibson 07' LP Vintage Mahogany
So you know, don't take me TOO seriously. But I'll give you my opinion anyway.
I've never seen a SC245 or SC250 in my GC so when I saw the SC245, I just had to try it since I'm torn between that and 250. (yet to find a 250 that i can try)
The looks weren't nearly as good as some I've seen on the web but it was still very pretty. But I won't go in looks, we know PRS can make good looking guitars.
With SC245 I was expecting a very mellow (compared to fire breathing Custom 22's) LP like guitar. I would like to start out by saying that this one doesn't really sound like a Gibson LP. At least nothing like the ones I've owned. PRS guitars definitely have a sound of their own. But it feels like it's pickup related more than anything. I liked the sound of the guitar a lot. It definitely had more mids going and didn't have as much bite as other PRS' I've played. The only complaint I had with this guitar is that it didn't play nearly as good as Custom 22 I've played the other day. To be completely honest though, I think it's more Guitar Center related than anything. Overall, a 10 top version of this guitar that plays well would be to die for IMO. Also, this one has one FAT neck. I personally don't mind having a fat neck (I'm ok with slimmer necks too. Either way) but people who don't like fat necks, beware. I think they offer it in "Wide thin" neck version too though. Not 100% on that. If I was to choose I think I'd go with the fat one though personally.
Custom 22 10 top no tremolo (a used one). I have no idea what the f' the original owner did to this guitar but it wouldn't hold tune to save its life. When I finally got it working for me, and started to actually play, I was blown away by how easy and fast the neck was, like the other Custom 22 I played the other day. Sound though.. Dragon II's sure have some fire. I know for a FACT that MANY people dig Dragon II's but I wasn't completely satisfied with the tone. Ofcourse, you could ease on gain and treble on your amp to compansate but I like more balanced pickups that will give me room to tweak on my amp. Meaning, I'd love to get a great sound without extreme settings. So this Custom 22 WTFPWNED the SC245 as far as ease of play goes. It's almost too easy and some people might not like it though. I could live with a little higher action myself.
Custom 22 Artist Package Quilt top the whole package no tremolo. WOW. Perfect on "looks". Playability? Almost as good as the other Custom 22 if not better. I think they might have different necks cause this one felt even faster to be honest. Won't be everyone's cup of tea but if you shred, or like faster necks, you're in for a ride. Sound is pretty much the same deal with the other Custom 22. One big complaint about the two Custom 22's. I LOVE how the rotary pup selector looks but man... I bet it SUCKS for you if you keep switching pups while you're playing. I definitely have some songs where I have to make quick switching and it's definitely hard to switch compared to your regular switcher. I'd definitely exchange the looks to practicality on this issue. Maybe you get used to it though who knows. But I think you can select either option when you're ordering? No problem if that's the case.
McCarty no trem. First time I've played one (like SC245). Guys, I'm announcing the PRS of the day!!. I was blown away. The action and playability landed between the SC245 and Custom 22's. Just where I like it. The pup selector was the standard 3 way toggle, me likey. Unadjustable stop bar, i likey. Sustain for days. Tone landed itself between the two models too!! It was neither too vintage sounding nor wild as hell. It had a very balanced character and distorted complex chords gave me the chills as they rang. Seriously, I didn't expect to like it this much. Great guitar.
Now.. I need to find me a SC250 and check it out. Also, I need to find me a good SC245 that plays like a dream. Then talk about dilemma...
