Hey guys!!

I was just browsing around and started to think about all these tube topics. My question now is, what´s the big difference betweeen the different tubes, most intrested in EL34 6L6 and KT88.

And a question for Peter, any particular reason for EL34´s in the VH4??

Lots of love and respect!

EL34 - Pronounced mids, breaks up earlier, 'musical' sounding tube
6L6 - Pronounced highs and lows, more headroom than EL34
KT88 - Even more pronounced lows, even more headroom than 6L6, 'hi fi' sounding

Thanks alot for that short summary! A follow up question though, what do you mean by "musical" sounding? :)

Groove tubes web site has alot of information about tubes that is easy to understand.

Your welcome, were all learning. I have found what tubes works in one amp well not always work in another. Tone is a matter of taste.

It's more warm, playful, breaks up earlier (VH4 of course creates overtones with MV past midnight). Has something I can't really define but it's a very familiar feeling.

Hey Peter!!

Better late than sorry! ;) I appriciate your answere either way. I´m currently using Ruby 6L6´s in my VH-4 but I think I´m going to switch back to the EL34´s....they were a little bit "cleaner" and cut through the mix a little better.

By the way, how about the preamp....what´s the stock preamp settings with tubes? Anyone else got any tips for a good match?

Holy Diver godamn!! :D

Well you can experiment a bit with preamp tubes.
I have a JJ on V1, V2,V3,V4 are Rubys

Yeah, I´ve read some that you experiment a bit with the preamp tubes, but I have no idea what to do!
I don´t know the different characteristics or what position controlls what in the preamp. So every tip is apprecitated!

Pardon me being Naive, but what do you guys mean when you say "more head room"? Thanks

More headroom is more wattage...wich means that you can play louder before it breaks up. You dig? ;)

What does that mean?!?!?

Well, it means that if all else fails Read The F****in Manual. ;)

@Sean: Headroom is basically when the extra wattage gives you the option to play ie the clean channel much louder before the signal breaks up/gets distorted. :)

Well.....I´ve allready read the F****G manual....doesn´t say nothing about it ;)
