Went to GC yesterday to demo the new Egnater head they carry and a Line 6 DL 4 pedal. It was yet another experience that makes me question why I bother to go there....

I told the kid working in guitars what I wanted to try. He looked around the store for the DL-4 pedal...said they didnt have any in stock...I looked around myself and found one of 6 they had in the store...

I took it over to the Egnater with the intention of trying the delay in the loop...the kid tells me the Egnater doesnt have a loop...I glanced behind the head...and sure enough...an effects loop....

He brings back the cables to patch the delay in...they were speaker cables.....I pointed that out and he got some other ones... then he patched it in.....he tried to patch only the send from the head to the input of the pedal...then looked perplexed as to why it wasnt working...I told him...well, you need another cable to go from the output of the pedal back to the return on the head...to complete the loop...he then asked...wait...if you already have something plugged into the pedal
input, where will you plug in the guitar? I said, the input of the amp...the effect is in the loop....I then asked for a PRS Custom 24 because that's my main axe and wanted to see how it did in the Egnater....he handed me a Singlecut...by this time his manager who was within earshot of this whole thing stepped in....I wasnt a jerk about this and tried to not be condescending to the kid...but jesus...go to Best Buy and sell DVD's or something....I realize that for every person that walks in and knows something about this stuff there are 20 more who know nothing and just buy what the salesman tell them to buy...but God...

I remember walking into music stores as a kid and everyone working there knew about all the great stuff and could demo it and make your jaw hit the floor...what the hell happend? Now we have kids selling guitars that cant comprehend an effects loop....Sorry..Rant over.

By the way the Egnater sounds pretty good...dont know much about it, but it had a nice clean and a good amount of gain without being too fizzy...

All GCs are condemned to being run by dumbasses, and yet they thrive because so many people without knowledge go in there and buy what the salesman tell them to buy. I'd say 1 in 39 of GC employees actually know what they're talking about.

I hope to meet him someday!

For christmass my wife wanted to buy me a voodoo labs amp switcher. I printed out the the discription page from guitar center on line, complete with picture. We call the store to make sure they have one, she goes down, kid not only informs her that its not in stock but that he will order it for her, but that it wont run without the $169 voodoo labs power supply and talks her into buying it. Oh, yeah, and the little prick never orders the amp switcher either. Week after new years, when I go in to find out what the hell happend, especially since I spent about five g's in that place in the last year or so, the dweeb fuck head assistant manager listens to me for about ten seconds, tells me he doesnt need to feel my hostility, and stomps away. Got the actual store manager to force the twit to stand in front of me and apologise. also ended up with a 30 percent discount on the acutal pedal I wanted in the first place.
Then there was the kid in guitars last year that got into a heated arguement with me, screaming at me that I didnt know what I was talking about, and that marshall only uses el34 or 6l6 tubes, and has NEVER used a 6550 in ANY of their amps, and that I must be an idiot and have had some sucker convince me otherwise and probably bought a modded amp and didnt know what I was talking about. damn near got that one fired. :gethim:
I go to Gallo's guitars here locally, or sam ash 25 miles away if I need anything now.

Maybe this kid was the same or somehow related to the kid that told me a Hughes and Kuettner amp would bury my Cornford in build quality

Guitar Center is sanctioned by law to only hire people with an IQ level of 74 or lower..

Yeah, sorry about that, I forgot to add about 16 0's on the tail of that 39.
Guess what though? Up here in Shittesota (Minnesota for those who don't know...) I actually DID meet someone in GC who knew what he was talking about!! Quite well too on top of it. Of course, the next time I go there a month later just to browse, I ask for him, and he no longer works there. Go figure...

Dude! I used to shop at GC in Roseville....that was around 7 years ago...had the same thing...I used to buy from a guy at the Hollywood GC...then moved to MN and HE had transfered to MN...he worked there about 6 months...then left back to LA...it was a pretty brutal winter I remember...probably scared the guy! He was the only one I'd ever encountered there that actually "got it".

there was actually a time here on long island where the commack GC was pirating sales guys away from Sam Ash, and they took about 6 guys that really knew their shit. It was why I started going to GC in the first place. They all quit or got fired by this tool of a manager that felt threatened by them. He should have, they each knew ten times more about playing, gear and what not than he or his two toads did. (that manager was the same twit that told me he would be happy to take my 87 prs 10 top custom w/birds off my hands, and offered me 1100 for it, since it was only worth about 1500, what a tool)

I hate Guitarget, I mean guitar center, they suck, at least the few in oregon I have been too, if you ask me they are an entry level music store, sure they have some nice Les pauls and some prs, fender but other then that I think they suck, I have been in those stores and the service sucks ,most the time I have to fill in the salesmen,
I especially like when I'm in there to spend real money and the salesman is wasting his time with some kid trying to sell him a guitar cable or strings, while i stand there with $1000.00 in my pocket. I bought a 2001 fender American deluxe strat from them, I had to get my tweed case for it somewhere else, because all they had were knock off cases, unfortunately they have driven most of your local music stores out of business, but if I need a guitar, an amp, cable, picks, strings, and a tuner all in one packager for $99.00 thats your store, I hate Guitarget I mean guitar center

I put GC more on the same plane with Kmart than Target. But, Guitarget is much funnier.

I don't even engage in conversation. I only go there to buy what I need and know about. I smile. I pay. I leave. just like buying a pair of socks. It's much easier that way. I have simply come to accept there is no help to be had there, only cashiers.

LOL! Sorry about your experience. I love my Guitar Center. No one gives a fuck. The other day I was playing a PRS SC245 through the Engater head/cab. I was pretty quiet and this guy who works there walks up to me and says "Dude i can't let you play that quietly. Please turn it up", laughs and leaves. I laugh and turn it up a bit. He passes me again says "Muuuch better thank you".

:D

Off topic: Which Cornford did you have again man? I might be considering a MK50h. I was told they are very bright. Is this true? I'm looking for a very smooth and mid rich amp without piercing highs.

I have the MK 50 II. I dont like overly bright sounds either, I run my presence and treble at about 4 each through a Greenback cab and its really warm.

That's very cool to hear.

I wonder if MK50 is any different than MK 50 II besides one being 1 channel. I'm ok with one channel as long as it can get very clean and very nice overdrives (doesn't have to be foot switchable at the same time either since I don't play live).

It's gonna be a recording amp mainly.

I reaaaally gotta get my ass to Tone Merchants some day.

I really dont know how similar they are...I had the intention of buying the single channel MK50 simply because Ive been using Marshalls for so long that Im used to using the volume knob to clean up...but this is what they(Solidbody Guitar in Minnesota) had in stock and I was pretty blown away by the clean on the amp...so, check it out. Id like to hear some other opinions on it. I wasnt blown away by the soundclips on Cornford's website and I dont feel they really represent the best aspects of the MK...the closest Ive heard is the live Guthrie Govan stuff on Youtube with his band..not the clips of him playing alone in a studio to backing tracks.
