No experiance with the shockmount but I bought a 6 space regular Gator case and its pretty good and light as hell. It only cost me about $90 to. With that said, I can't see the shock mount case sucking!

Awesome!

Only reason i was thinking of going shockmount, is because my rack will have a tube poweramp in it..

Think shockmount would be better for that? Or would i be ok with the standard Gator case?

Definitely get a shockmount if you are using a tube poweramp. Well you can do that or get a rack a few spaces bigger the you need and mount the poweramp a few clicks away from the bottom! Thats what Im going to do in order to avoid having to buy another rack   (I have a 6 space but only need 4!)

ask around as much as possible.

Only reason I say so:

The older SKB shockmounts were terrible. The tension from the shock coils would cause the case to literally twist. Then, the covers would not fit anymore. It was hopeless. They sucked.

The Gators look like they might be similar.

The regular gator racks are definitely similar to the SKB's but there shock mount and ATA cases are much better quality.

and judging by the picture, guitarslinger might be right about the quality. These are the cases I was talking about

To be honest, they do look much better quality than the one i posted. Id imagine a fair bit more expensive.. but id rather spend the extra money on protection, than spend it on repairs for broken rack units!!

That link you posted didnt show an image, but im assuming this is what you're talkin about?

I think you maybe right Gene! Thanks for the heads up

What is the benefit of having a shockmount case with a tube power amp, assuming the tubes in the power amp are secured well and you wait for the amp to cool before moving it?

The non-shock mounted SKB and gator cases are generally looked down upon by the PA experts. I have had fine luck with them though, and like their lighter weight. It all depends on how much you will be moving it and who will be moving it. If you move the gear and don't gig much the plastic cases are fine. If you gig alot and have help moving things the nice ATA wood cases are the way to go.

The gators are made of plastic and they have give. If you put a tube poweramp on the bottom and you aren't carefull and drop the rack you can crack a tube or damage the poweramp. The shock rack lifts the poweramp off of the bottom and its free floating, so even if you drop the rack ,the poweramp has a cushion and wont bottom out so to speak.

In my experience cases are all about the latches and hardware. While the Gator and SKB type cases are lighter, the latches can be a real problem. I've thrown away many of that type of case for just that reason. If you can stand the weight, a real flight case with good quality, recessed hardware will last longer than the gear it is holding and is worth every penny. This has been my experience with every real flight case I've ever bought and my band has probably spent over 20K in cases over the years. The real ones stick around forever and the Gators and SKBs eventually get tossed. I'm not saying those cases are crap because I still have a few small SKB racks I use for personal stuff. But if you are doing any serious gigging and hauling gear around, a real case is a better value in the long run.
