Anyone play through a Hiwatt custom 50 or 100? your thoughts about the amp. Did you play through both and which you preferred. Is there a big feel difference between the two? From what I hear on youtube I really like the clean tone. I also like the Reeves custom 50 but for the little bit extra it cost I think I would just get the Hiwatt. I like the heads better but also like the Fane 2x12 speaker combo.

I have a Dan Reeves era Hiwatt Custom 50 DR504 and it's very nice. Has a vintage vibe and feel. Super loud for 50 watts. Lots of clean headroom. If you are wanting to push it in a club environment, go 50 watts, it's plenty loud, actually too loud, LOL. Although it's one of the "gainier" master volume versions, it's not a super high gain head. But it loves pedals. Can't say which to get. Seems that the Reeves amps are "supposed" to be closer to the true vintage specs over the new Hiwatts, but I can't say for sure.

like the super clean of the Hiwatt. I'm a big David Gilmour fan and have a double sideXside rack much like his.

I read reviews about the Reeves and slot of people said the same thing about it being closer to vintage Hiwatt than the new Hiwatts.

I'm not into pushing it to reach over drive, that's why I was wondering if I should get the 100 watt over the 50 watt. From what you say 50 should be plenty loud.

The 50 watt should be fine and is really loud, but if you want the most clean head room for any situation, go 100.

I had a 100 watt model from the 70's three years ago.

And? How was it. What did you like and dislike about it?

It was very cool .... did that British crunch thing well but did not have the hair around it like a Marshall does. The clean was much better. It was one of the best built amps I have ever seen. I have a lot of amps and my drummer at the time loved it so I sold it to him.

Just go check out some 70's WHO .... most of that was a Hiwatt. That is the sound of that amp.

Yeah I luv the cleans. Really like the Gilmour tones in it. Was it a quiet amp?

Mine is very quiet, but keep in mind, they are not high gainers.

Get a Reeves, you won't be disappointed.

im not looking for a high gainer so that fits the bill. I have 2 Tube Drivers, Rat R2DU, Maxon OD808 and a Hartman Germanium fuzz to cover most of that. I pretty much have a David Gilmour double wide rack, just need his Hiwatt type head.

Im Looking at the Bogner 20th anniversary XTC for the high gain.

My Hiwatt takes pedals very well, including pumping it with my POD XTLive at times for fun, makes it sound huge.

you have a very nice collection of amps Death by Uberschall.

Thanks, my "go to" amp is the Uberschall. Sees way more play time then anything else.

i prefer marshall for the huge crunch but if i ever got a hi watt i would love doing pink floyd type stuff on it. don't see my self owning another 100 nmv beast though :)

Ive been looking at old Hiwatts...man are they going up in price! Might settle for a Reeves, but I really would rather have an old one.

Yeah I like the Reeves custom 50. I guess I will wait til I see a good deal on one, either hiwatt dg 504 or DG103 or a reeves.

For the price of a new one, the old ones are about the same.

The Reeves are every bit as good as the old ones build wise...the old ones have the "cool" factor though. There is a Custom 50 on Ebay right now at a decent price. I think its a 50....

Not trying to hijack the thread, but Curt Granger makes a nice DR504 clone.
