Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make a Rebel 112 cab an open back? The obvious solution is to take a saw to the back, but what would this do to the sound? I stack 2 of these together and the issue I'm having is that the closed back cabs make the sound very directional on a church stage and hard for the other musicians to hear. I'm hoping that making these cabs open back will help disperse the sound a little.

I'm currently running a Two Rock SP22 head through the cabs, and the bass is just overwhelming as well. Am I barking up the wrong tree or should I make the cabs open back?

Have you thought about waiting for one of those guitar center or music123 sales and get a tourmaster 2x12. It's a great sounding 2x12 and you can do open/closed back by unscrewing the backplates. More of an initial cost up front, but may be cheaper in the long run and less of a hassle than irreversibly modding the 1x12s and if you don't like the new sound having to undo it or get a new ones. Also, you can then pair them together for a wet/dry thing, or keep your 2x12 at your church and use the 1x12 for at home etc.

I made a Rebel 1x12 clone cab and I eventually cut out part of the back panel to make it into an open back cab. It worked fine and the cabinet sounds just like an open backed cab.

You might be able to peel the tolex back from the area of the cutout, then saw the back panel, then glue the tolex back around the cutout. That's what I did.

That's a great idea! How much of the back did you cut away? Just the bottom? I like the idea of peeling the tolex back to get a clean look. I'll definitely do that soon.

I would get a piece of multi ply plywood and cut it to the size you want and drill a hole in it for the speaker jack. Paint it black. Then if you want your cab closed you would still have the panel in tact.

Here's some pix of the cab I built. Now one of my bandmates owns it:

In order to cut out the back I removed the jackplate and peeled the tolex away from the back from the bottom up to about the top of the jackplate. Then I cut out the back, cleaned it up and stuck the tolex back using contact cement. Then I slit the tolex where the new hole is and finished off the tolex around the new hole.

The cab is tamer and easier to hear with the back opened up. The speaker gets a five teardrop rating for blues.
