I'm thinkin about pickin' up an OCD for my Rebel 20. Currently using a Boss SD1 but it's got too much top & mid for my taste. Any rebel users out there with an OCD? How does it sound w/ the rebel? Any other suggestions on a good O/D stomp for that extra umph in front of the rebel?

The SD1 is very, very tubescreamer-esque in tone. It has that nasally, mid hump thing going on. And with humbuckers, its almost impossible to get unity gain, and it sounds like your dry signal is coming thru plastic, surrounded by a buzz of drive. That's the classic problem with Op-amp overdrives into clean amps.

The OCD is pretty far from a Tubescreamer, as far as overdrive pedals go. A lot more "amp like" to my ears. I love mine. V4 is by far the best yet. The OCD has pleasant mids, and a nice solid bass repsonse, and the switchable High peak/ low peak gets you a good variety of tones. I've gone thru a TON of overdrive pedals, but the OCD is the one I settled on.

It all depends on your application.

If you want to set the rebel relatively clean or light breakup, and use a pedal to get a pretty accurate tube-y crunch, the OCD will be great.

If you want to set the rebel for light breakup, and use a pedal to get great SRV ish tones, the BB Preamp would probably work better. Likewise, the BB preamp is a great choice to boost an already heavy-overdriven amp. The tuneable high and low EQ works wonders. The BB is basically like the best improved-tube-screamer I've ever heard.

The BB is a bit raw-er than a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive (the best tube screamer type pedal I've ever used). Comparing a BB to a tube screamer, I think is a bit off IMHO. The BB has WAYYY more gain on tap, and it reacts more like a distortion pedal to me vs. a overdrive or boost, which is what a tube screamer really is. I like the BB for more distortion type pedal...like boosting ChA of the BMAN...or ChA of the SL or VX... I like using the Tube Screamer for doing more "boosting or overdriving" higher gain stuff, which is great for leads.

IMHO I couldn't live without either the VL Sparkle Drive or BB Preamp. They are both in their own right killer pedals, meant for different purposes.

Yeah, I guess it's unfair to lump the BB into the same category as all the other TS808 clones. It definitely is different.

I guess what I was trying to say is that the BB's tonality is just VERY different from the OCD. Mainly due to their circuit layouts being very different.

I like my OCD V-2 with my Rebel. I set the gain on the Rebel around 12-ish and run the OCD to taste. Great lead tones! I also have a BB....way different from the OCD. If I use the BB then I use more gain on the Rebel and get a little bit less contrast when clicking it on and off than I do with the OCD.
