Anyone else have squirrelly problems with the G major 2?

Hey guys. I bought a G major 2 recently, I bought it barely used. It came to me packed very well so nothing happened to it in shipping. But after getting it I noticed that it does some really squirrelly stuff.

Sometimes only the backlight comes on, sometimes itll have random jargon on the screen. I narrowed it down to a problem with the ribbon that connects the faceplate controls with the board on the inside.

Has anyone else had problems like this? Experience with TCE and returns at all, I have the original receipt so I am not worried about a return but I have heard they aren't great to deal with and it takes forever. I know that it's a cheaper unit but you'd think that it would actually work ya know? I have heard lots of stories of GM2s doing spooky things. So I thought I would ask you guys.

All I know is I was going to buy one of these but read so many bad reviews about people having issues with the GMajor-2 that I totally ran away from it... YMMV

It doesn't do it all the time or anything and I really got a great price on it plus the effects in it are amazing but,, dat build quality... :(

You would think that after all the bull shit with the first G major build quality that they would have made sure the 2 was built better and while it is built better, the ribbon between the controls and the board is more temperamental than a toddler. Not sure how I would solve the issue of the ribbon. Going to take it to a local stereo/electronics shop to see if the ribbon can be replaced and made more stable. If I can do that, this unit will be a total win.

Also, I bought the FCB 1010 for it, didn't care for it. Any suggestions out there for a solid and simple midi foot controller with 4-6 buttons or so?

I had some issues with mine, forgot what the issues were but sent it in to warranty and had it back pretty quick. TC was really good about things and it's been great ever since. I also use an RJM mastermind with mine that works great!!!

How did you initiate customer service help? I have called them, I have emailed them and nothing back in over a month :S

I would be happy to return it and get one back, it's under warranty still but it seems getting a hold of them is difficult.

I would rather see what's up with them before voiding warranty with an after market mod.

I have been looking into the mastermind. Seems like the go to f/s

I bought one new 4 years ago. It started to crash and lock after a few months. I forgot about it because I was using the AxeFx Ultra live. When I remembered it was past warranty. TC was gracious enough to fix it. When it came back it worked for about two weeks and started to do the same thing. I sent it back again. It returned and worked for about a month...yup it started to lock and crash again.

I then moved to California. I spoke to TC and they sent me a new unit. Guess what after a few weeks it started to lock and crash. I gave up and bought a Rocktron Xpression.

This year at NAMM, I brought it with me. I went to the TC booth and told them my story. I said that I brought the unit with me so they can throw it in the garbage lol.
Yesterday another brand new TC GMajor2 arrived for me. God I hope this one works.

All through this TC's service has been great. I just want one that works because it really is a good FX box. Maybe this one will be the ticket.

WOW,,, holy crap dude. That's really crappy to hear. You are more patient than I am that is forsure.

I wonder if I should just have my friend replace the ribbon and bypass the warranty BS. Seems like that may fix it. No clue though..

Really bummed out because the effects in the thing are awesome. I managed to luck out that I bought the unit in the USA so I am able to get it repaired by the USA service rather than wait for what seems like forever for the Canadian service people to even acknowledge that I sent an email.

I wonder what the exact source of the problems are in these units. Seems like the ribbon problem is pretty common but I wonder if there's something else that could be something TCE could simply improve and be done with all the warranty stuff, kind of like microsoft did with the xbox 360 and the heat sync.

I could afford to get something else but not the G-force or anything. What is a comparable unit but maybe a step up in quality from another company?

THIS...

I had intellifex's for years and year and my rocktron Xpression for 4 years.

Never had a moments trouble ever with any of the Rocktron units..

Good Luck with the new TC unit Mark, sounds like it has been a party...

Rocktron Xpression and the Digitech GSP 1101 seem to be great units with no issues.

I am going to get rid of the GM2 and FCB 1010 w/uno chip for $300 as is w/receipt. Ill post an ad when I have some pics, were in a blizzard so that wont be tonight.

The unit works most of the time but has moments of being a temperamental jerk so I would rather avoid that if possible. This would be better suited to someone playing live less or with the patience to send it back and such. The FCB wasn't for me either, too much.

So... either the Rocktron Xpression with a rocktron MIDI or a Digitech GSP1101 with maybe the Control 2. Thems be my choices in my budget.

I just bought a brand new one from a TC dealer on Ebay. Had it in my rack about ten minutes.
Then it started locking up and the LCD was going blank. I tried to reinitinalize it a few times. Same issue.
I returned it. I did some research on the TC forum. This is a known issue with the ribbon cable that connects the display. From what I read people are opening them and pushing down hard on the ribbon cable and that seems to solve the issues for a few. From what I understand after the unit is manufactured the cable crimp comes loose over time and if the unit is in conditions where the temputure changes.
You would think that TC would address this????
Made me scared to have them send out a replacement. Got a refund and bought a mint condition used G-Force. Much better unit. You just need to spend more time building usable presets. IMHO

The real annoyance here is the fact that the effects inside the GM2 are awesome and high quality. You'd think someone over there would say "hey... let's fix this" but nope, notta.

Just bought a digitech gsp 1101 with the control 2 floorboard. It'll do everything I need I'm sure. Apparently it's pretty idiot proof. And I would be that idiot :D

Good/bad that there's people to talk with about this sort of thing. But I am glad to have the advice.

GM2 and FCB1010 is gone... hopefully to someone that has patience.

SO.... here we are... decision time. Help me out.

Digitech GSP1101 + Control 2 - found the pair used for $450

OR

Rocktron Xpression + Rocktron midimate - found the pair used for $325

Thoughts?

I previously used the original G Major and had issues (encoders and freezing). I switched to the GM2 several years ago and it's been rock solid for me. Mine has had zero issues and I gig regularly with it.

I'm jealous of you forsure. I know a few guys that have had the same good luck.

Mine has worked fairly well. For a while, it was doing this thing where it wouldn't change presets when I change channels. Oddly, it quit doing it and has worked fine for a long time now.

Well I haven't used my big rig in forever. I turned it on tonight. Guess what? The 3rd G Major II is now locking up and freezing. Wow, just wow.

Wow man that's amazing. I know you said you haven't used it in a while, but did you use it at all when you first rec'd the 3rd one? There are so many horror stories about this unit. I bought one when it first came out and have yet to have any issues. Maybe I'm the only one!?!?
