Looking to find something I can use into the clean channel of my 20th Shiva to give me some slight grit in my clean, but also something I could keep on when I switch to my gain channel without killing tone or dynamics. It has to be something that sounds fat and wide, smooth like my amps as well. I tried the Lovepedal Kalamazoo, Fulltone Plimsoul and now the Xotic BB MB and still searching. Needs top also sound killer into the clean channel. Maybe I need to buy a pedal that has a tube.

To me, the 20th Shiva with EL34s has tons of gain....more than I could use....even if I was playing the heaviest metal. That said....I would only use a pedal intio the clean. Maybe I will try the Fulltone Plimsoul again. That and the Lovepedal Kalamazoo seemed to be the best so far. The Kalamazoo is more driven Fender tone which might be why it blends well with the Shiva's clean.

Thinking some other Xotic pedals, Xactone, Kingsley which have tubes, Hermida like the Zen drive which has tubes, maybe ToneFreak Naked, a Suhr or something else?
You guys think a tube in the pedal is necessary?

OK...the thing is, the Event Horizon that I have has a Fender clean channel and my Shiva has a Fender clean as well and the Kalamazoo has a somewhat Fender or Dumble voicing to me and for whatever reason it really sounds like it belongs when i use it....as if I just hit a "pushed" switch on the amp. That is why it fits perfectly. If I bought a Splawn or something it would not work as well.....
The Plimsoul is nice and I liked it when i tried it but it is Marshally and my amps already do that. I can say that the Plim would give me Plexi tones on the clean channel but I really just think I get those tones I need which are light to moderate crunch tones easily on the amp's gain channel just by adjusting my guitar's volume! I have been spending more and more time on one channel these days rather than changing channels all the time......so the Kalamazoo feels like a perfect mate and I am tired of the search so i might stay a while!

Hard to beat the Suhr KoKo boost

Awesome, so that sound great into the Shiva clean? Thanks.

None of these pedals will come close tot he gain I could get out of the Bogner so I might just grab a cheap LPB1 boost and use it to add some grit to the clean.

BB MB

Zvex Box of Rock???
After hearing your clips.....you have me interested big time!

I was also looking at the Plimsoul and Kalamazxoo but I like that this BOR has a BOOST and Drive switch! That might solve my issue because if I see this corerectlt...the Boost just adds some grit...hence solving my problem of just wanting some dirt on clean assuming it does not rob the low end of the amp and that it will also work on the gain side.

Now, how does the dirstortion side work? Is it really distortion or just OD? I don't need a gain monster. Are the controls for both switches? Finally, any bass loss at all?

Which is the version to get. They have something called a Vexter version?

THANKS!

Check out Rockbox: Boiling Point or the Baby Blues OD http://www.rockbox.com/effects.htm
It's spendy but one of the most versitle OD/distortion/clean boost pedasl I've come across yet. koko boost is just LOVELY too if you just want slight to mild front end boost. But the Rockbox pedals have many tone shaping options. Also the Clean boost on the Boiling Point as just plain SICK! It's all I used till I bought a Diezel. The other guitar player in my band is currently using my B.P. into a standard shiva w/6L6's. He was using a BB+ prior to this which could also fit your needs.

The "Sweet Honey Overdrive" wasn't for me. Didn't like the voicing

It is important to match the pedal with the amp and so far the Fulltone Plimsould and Lovepedal Kalamazoo work best, but after this thread I can see the Box of Rock works great! My Xotic BB sounds horrible with my Shiva....thin and nasal.

the xotic mb was a pedal I played two chords through and it went out the doo totally horrible I kept the original and the AT moddel I love both in every amp i own:)

I also didn't bond with the mb version. Really like the regular version much better.

I know RockstarNick really likes the Plimsoul for his "plexi" type tones on the clean of his EL34 Shiva 20th.

What's an AT model???

Weird on the BB MB because there are demos on the net that show they can sound identical.
You can make em sound identical

How about the Xotic BB Andy Timmons model????

BIggest problem I find with these amps is the clean channle is Fender and the gain side is Marshall so you need to find a pedal that does both well or meshes with both. I might try the ToneFreak Naked OD! The Lovepedals loves my Shiva's clean and sounds good on the dirty side too but still is a Fender or Dumble style OD. The Plimsoul to me sounded good but was OK on my clean channel. Will have to try again. For now it will be the standard BB but unfortunately the standard BB boosts mids and I don't want that because I want it to just add some grit on the clean channel.

I want to try an MXR Micro Amp, Love Pedal Amp 50, EH LPB-1 and Xotic EP, plus a Naked OD.

The problem is if the pedal does not have a bass control...it would have to retain the amp's bass.

shocked at how great the Box of Rock sounds in the demo by hunter

I forgot I had this! The Ben Fargen Sonic Edge J&J Overdrive! WOW!
Ben is a genious

Box of Rock is a GREAT pedal, but to my ears, might have almost TOO much low end.

I have a 20th anniv Shiva with KT 88's and have found that the Fulltone fulldrive II and the OCD sound awesome in the clean channel. I use a semi open backed Bogner 2x12 with 2 Celestion Classic lead 80's and its the best setup I have ever had so far.....................................

Ive been using the Wampler Paisley Drive for my two 66 princeton reverbs, but I tried it in front of the shiva and wow!...Ive used the bb+pre, koko boost, ocd, tube screamers, tube drivers,-all exc. pedals, but this Paisley drive adds NO tonal color to your axe.Only a little kick-its not a heavy metal pedal, but I know metalheads that use it..

Hi, I tried the KoKo Boost but without a volume control it was useless for me. It needs to have a separate volume and gain to be useful. Best I have found so far are the Sonic Edge J&J OD and Xotic BB. Best thing about the BB is how transparent it is, on top of the Bogner's gain channel....it just sounds like some additional gain. I only like it on the clean channel if set very low gain which is fine because anything with gain, I rely on the Shiva. :)

Wampler Paisley Drive? Might try that or another Wampler or a Tonefreak Naked.
The J&J Overdrive is the front runner because it is the most amp like I have ever tried. That and the Kalamazoo on the clean channel sounded like the amp but with more gain.
