I think Chinese and Bogners go together.

Gary!!!!
Yeah Bro, she came loaded with Chinese
but a couple were damaged in the shipping.
So I replaced the whole line with Ruby HG+
sounds pretty Decent with them in there,
just curious if a set of Chinese Pre's would
sound better.
I get a Loud Pop when I switch channels via.
the footswitch, any Idea what would cause
that Gary?

My 20th had no pop. I wouldn't think that was a tube but try. It might be a bad switching relay or ground. Hopefully not. The Rubys are Chinese selected high gain and lower noise. I would reccommend a newer Gold Lion B759 balanced for PI V5 to start with. Get the Chinese out of that slot. Even an LPS is better. Most think V1 has the biggest impact and it does but the PI has just as much of an impact on tone and feel. Never liked a Chinese PI. I would leave the Rubys in most of the slots, especially V3 and V4 as these are your cathode followers. One feeds the tonestack and the other half is blue and red final stages. and one the loop. Chinese take the beating in these slots much better. A Tung Sol will die fast here. Some other tubes as well. V6 is your clean channel so I would try something a little lower gain than the Ruby HG unless you want more breakup. If I remember that channel breaks up enough on it's own. A Tung Sol, not gold pin, might work here. V1 is your input for all three channels or first stage. V2-V3 is your red and Blue channel stages. V6 is your second and third stage for your green channel. V4 is your loop. Believe it or not a JJ might be good here. I would not suggest JJ's for a Bogner but I also would not be against trying some of the ECC803S long plates in a few spots. I would also try some EH in green and red slots.

Thanks for the Info. Brutha...
You've been very Helpful!!

My current setup (in 101B obviously) is LPS in V1, V5-V6 and chinese in V2-V4.

I used to use EHX's in V2-V3 which give more creamy saturation and Tung-Sol's RI, which give darker sound, but still nice and worth considering.

LPS in V1 and V5 (input tube and PI) gives nice clean kick to the preamp and poweramp. Both sections are not being overdriven too much, and V2&V3 shape the overdrive. Try for Yourself.

Hey,
I'm a new member, first post - Good to see some Bogner users here!
I'm actually looking for any info using NOS tubes in an Ecstasy, I have a '96 101b that I run with Winged C's + mostly TungSols. Have tried just about every new/re-issue combination, I find the gold pin TungSols to be the overall best tone-wise and most reliable in all pre-amp positions so far... Right about the Chinese being good too though, just wear out quick.

So now I'm pretty keen to see how a good set of NOS tubes will sound in this amp.
Has anyone had experience with this? Any tips on types or brands, where to buy? The NOS market seems to be an expensive minefield of hit-or-miss! Are the old Mullards really worth the cash?
Any info appreciated. Cheers!

i'd recommend trying a NOS RFT in v1. (disclaimer--i have a few spares FS.) they're great for high gain, more articulate than any current-production 12ax7 i've heard, and they have a nice crunchy brightness to them. they also give a nice 'pushed' clean tone.

i've run them as v1 in my XTC and my Mark V, playing rock and hard rock high gain sounds. they're East German from the 70s and 80s, so they aren't as super-expensive as the Brit and USA tubes from the 50s and 60s.

in the other positions, i like EHX in v2-3 and LPS in the PI, like Setneck mentions. i also like the Tung-Sol reissue in v6, for the clean channel; those tubes sound bright and clear to me and give a great bright thick clean tone for me.

I have tried many NOS tubes in my XTC, although I ended up with CP tubes in preamp (RFT/Siemens EL34's in poweramp). I had a great results with:
- Telefunken smooth plates in PI - great tube, very clean and pronounced
- Tesla E83CC goldpins as input V1 tube (not so distorted but very textured)
- RFT, Tungsram, Brimar, Telefunken ribbed plates and Philips in dirty gain stages - especially Philips (labelled Phillips Miniwatt, Valvo, etc.) gave me very detailed sound. I loved Tungsram in V2, huge sound, thick bottom, great mids. Brimar was a bit brighter than Philips, but less gainy. TFK ribbed was very interesting sounding, very RFT was also good, most crunchy

Tried also Siemens (too dark in XTC), Tesla ECC803S (too clean and ungainy).

One thing about NOS -at least to my ears and at least in XTC: they are not too aggressive as CP tubes. So for me (rock/metal tunes like Dio/late Sabbath Martin era) they lacked saturation, while sounded really great though. I still keep NOS tubes, but for everydays use I have CP preamp tubes in my amp.

And don't be afraid to buy pulls. Most of my NOS tubes are pulls, of course it happens that You may buy crap, but most of them despite being used have still great parameters. It is hit-or-miss of course, but only try to be carefull and You'll get many good tubes, which are still available around.

Regards, Andy :)

Thanks for the NOS info guys, appreciate it! Been doing a lot of research on this lately so great to hear your opinions on the RFT, Tungsram, Teslas and so on...
I've been looking at a few sets & randoms FS online that appear to be high quality, so I think it's time to dive in & try a few out. Maybe the best idea is to get a variety and see what I like first.
I guess the biggest concern is reliability as the amp gets used a lot. Just got it back from renting it out to Swiss guitarist Tommy Vetterli from Coroner for their tour. Will post a video of that later. Was awesome to be out the front & hear it for once!
Cheers guys.
