I have friend in Nashville looking at different hot rod Marshall style amps and asked me if new much about the Mako line. Ive never had or played one. Anyone have experience with these? Im pretty sure he's looking at the Makoplex model.

I had a Dorado and it sounded absolutely nothing like a hot rodded Marshall to me. IMO it reminded me of a VHT mixed with a Bogner. Really tight and dark sounding with a ton of gain and low end. No idea what the other models sound like though.

I have the Mak2 - Black (which is the 2 channel Makoplex) it is kind of how Mega described it, a little dark and can get the tightness of a VHT as well as the dryness based on where the Freak knob is positioned. However, it can get Saturation as well, really versatile and I think it does Hot Rodded Marshall really well. Mine is still for sale :D

I've played Cyndicate's, and dug the shit out of it! It's tight and crisp for sure. The freak knob is all important in how the amp feels and sounds.

I just talked to him and think he was wanting something a bit more classic.

Nope. I had an early VPlex that sounded like shit and the guy who sold it to took it back. After got it back and took it to Trace he emailed me back much later and said something was wrong with some parts that Voodoo had gotten in that were bad, that they had fixed it and now its sounds great. How it even went out sounding like that I'll never know. So Ive been a bit scared to go that route personally and my buddy Jamie was there when I was checking out the VPlex after I got so he knows about that situation so Im sure he isnt going to go that route.

That's sucks that happened. I've never had a bad Voodoo product (modded ADA MP-1, a Bogen Chasis Witchdoctor, and 2 cabs) and Trace has always taken care of me. Just thinking of suggestions for your buddy that me might like in more of the "marshally" voiced amps.

Can I suggest a Splawn Quick Rod? I owned a hand wired Mako Makoplex too. If you want my impressions of the Makoplex, you'll have to PM me.

I liked the Mako, but the man is correct....there is NO BEATING a QR for that hot rodded Marshall sound. One of the best values out there.

Thank you for bringing your concern to my attention and I apologize that your experience was anything less than positive (truly).

A couple years ago there was a batch of 500pF silver mica caps that were defective (many manufacturers received the same lot). Unfortunately it took around 30-40 hours of use before the caps failed (IE: the did not fail immediately) so the amps sounded/functioned fine when they were shipped. Once we realized those caps were defective we immediatley contacted the respective customers and replaced the defective caps for free (only 4 amps went out with those caps).

So Ive been a bit scared to go that route personally and my buddy Jamie was there when I was checking out the VPlex after I got so he knows about that situation so Im sure he isnt going to go that route.

I understand your concern (truly I do) and it is important to me that you are happy. Please let me know what we can do to make you happy and if it's within my power I will be glad to make it happen. I look forward to talking with you and coming to a resolution that will meet your satisfaction.

Thanks for your note here Trace. I didnt mean any disrespect, your reputation is good with alot of people and think you are great guy and company but I have to honest with my experience. Thats one thing I cant figure out about these forums.... people tend not to say trully what they think sometimes for fear making someone mad or losing a sale. I understand that on one level but for me.... I want to know the good along with the bad. I have read many good things about your amps and Pete Laramee, who hangs here and I respect him a ton, he loves his Marshall you guys modded. So my view isnt completely jaded, that said when Im looking at certain amp I want to know the good and bad so I can make an informed decision.

You say you guys fixed that sitution and given you reputation Id take that to the bank. The thing that whole sitution spoke of the most of was the seller who to his credit did take the amp back and it was you who made it right. But an amp that was sold second hand sounding really bad like that by no means should have been IHMO. I had no idea about the caps failing after they were shipped and I just had to be honest with my experience so someone could at least see that I had an issue that one time and that you took care of it. Yes that can sway people either way but at least they have that knowledge and it's just not whipsered in background so they never know. Again no hard feelings and wish you all the luck. You obviously are making some great amps as some great pro's are using them.

I'm apologize if I did not articulate this properly in my prior post;
The amp did in fact sound fine/just as it should and it was working 100% perfectly when it was shipped (see prior post). It would not have been shipped otherwise as no good would ever come from that. Naturally we would prefer that this never occurred but as it did the very best thing we can do is stand behind our product 100% and make it right, which is what we did.

I just had to be honest with my experience so someone could at least see that I had an issue that one time but that you took care of it and that can sway people either way but at least they have that knowledge and it's just not whipsered in background so they never know.

Again I appreciate you voicing your experience and you are certainly not wrong for doing so. Customer feedback is very important to us and I would much rather have the opportunity to address it than have it whispered about in the background :)

Again no hard feelings and wish you all the luck. You obviously are making some great amps as some great pro's are using them.

I am glad I had the opportunity to address this. Have yourself a great Friday and an even better weekend! :)

Thanks again

I love the way you handle this stuff. I have to say that I wish other boutique amp and guitar builders had the same sort of respectful attitude towards their customers. I have had several nightmarish experiences with custom guitar builders recently who have been unbelievably rude and made me as a customer feel as if they were doing me a favor by providing me the service I paid for. I have always been more than respectful towards these folks and have received extremely poor customer service in return. Never returning emails... being promised delivery of a neck in three weeks and it is now almost a year... delivered a partially finished neck with the wrong nut size... etc. etc. etc... Unfortunately, I believe that the guy I'm currently dealing with, who has $600 of my parts and $100 in deposit for work, is only going to respond to litigation... It is refreshing to see your attitude towards customers just when I was convinced that customer service was DEAD...

I got a dumb question. Does the Mako stuff come with a footswitch? I ordered a MAK2 a while back and forgot to ask Andrew about it. I sent him an email but he hasn't responded yet. He must be busy.

I've owned a Makoplex as well as a Custom 100. Honestly, neither amp did much for me. I bought the Makoplex because I borrowed danhops' for a while and loved it. However, the one that I bought didn't sound nearly as good as the one that Dan had... :aww:

And that's the Makoplex I ended up with and I thought it fellated goats. But I sold it to a guy who had another Makoplex and he said the one I sold him sounded better. So at least I got to try one.

It just goes to show, one mans goat fellater is another mans tone machine. :D
