I tried an experiment last night and it turned out like shite-nothing like the egnater tones I was hoping to record directly. After picking up some Redwire impulses and reading their website, in theory, it sounded like a great way to play my egnater direct to the computer and monitor with headphones.

My signal chain was this: guitar > M4s > gmajor > mono out > rt2/50 (mono out) > weber mini mass 50 (spkr cable, fully attenuated (1), no speaker connected) > Line out (instrument cable) > motu mkIII interface > Digital Performer > LAConvolver with Redwire impulse loaded

I anticipated some degradation of the signal and tone utilizing the attenuator, but what I got was completely unusable. Very thin, retaining no character or tone of the individual modules. I could tell there was distortion on some of the gainier modules (COD, SL) but it sounded more like distortion artifacts or a bad fuzz. The clean modules just sounded thin and brittle/flat. What it sounded like was an absolutely attenuated signal. Tried cranking the power amps volume for a few minutes with no appreciable results. As I'm writing I'm wondering if I should have taken the gmajor out of the equation to ensure it wasn't sucking any of the signal (with the same setup into speaker cabinet instead of Weber - awesome tones...)

Wondering if anyone has had success with this or a similar setup. I had hoped for a decent signal to be coming into my interface and then the redwire impulses 'completing' the tone by adding a simulated 'authentic' speaker response. Maybe it's just not realistic to get a good tube sound DI?
