Anybody here ever play one? If so, what did you think?

Looks pretty interesting to me. I've heard the Screamer is somewhat similar to the Blackmore and Savage 120. Only bad thing I've heard is that it might lack some low end, although I know 1x12's like the Mark III and Yamaha T100C have more than enough low end for me.

yeah, sure. I think i've tried the head more often, though, but i have tried the combo. Not as overtly "metal" as a lot of the other engls, will get there on channel 4, but with the gain near enough maxxed (at least at lower volumes)... nice cleans, crunch tones...

I prefer the blackmore, basically.

nice cleans, good for leads, didnt really like the rythmn tone. Sounded quite cool with the od808, but i say that with everything

So it would do pretty good modern tones with a boost then?

talk to dimebag11. i believe he tried one at derekb's

That slutbag has only played the head version. :D

This is the coolest sounding clip I've ever heard from the Screamer combo:

It seems like it would do that "the Haunted" type thing really well.

Screamer w/V30 is just fucking sick!!
I've wanted one of these for over a year now... but I'm poor.
:aww:

Listened to that clip several times....and it's great. Only thing I've got to say is you just know it'd sound better through a closed back 2x12 or 4x12 ;)

Screamer combo is the weakest amp in the Engl range imho, I always felt the od-tones were to fizzy and grainy. Played it a lot as a friend owned one. After a while he ran it thru a 4x12 (1960V with V30s) and that was better. Then 1 day he played the Screamer head at a local shop, bought it on the spot and sold the combo. The head does sound different, at least these 2 did.

^ yeah, i'd pretty much agree that the head version of the screamer sounds better, yoeri. If you know you want modern tones, and the prices are similar (here there isn't that much in it), i'd go blackmore, without a doubt. Just generally better rock, hard rock, and metal tones, IMO... though the cleans aren't as nice, and no reverb. Considering you like your 5150 so much, though, Mark, i doubt that's an issue...

EDIT: also, i'd add, even the head version has a little of that open-backed combo feel/sound... maybe it's the reverb or the voicing, or the 50 watts, i dunno, but yeah, it just doesn't scream (no pun intended) metal to me...

If that's the combo then it sounds killer! I really like that tone.

Yeah that's the combo - I found it on derekb's site. There are a few more clips of the screamer on there but they have a real doomy vibe - not my thing. If the combo sounds like that, can the head really be that different?? I've had other people tell me I'd rather have the head too, but none of the other clips I've heard kick ass like that combo clip...

You should get the head and give us a full report... and lots o' clips!!
:D
