Anyone still have the EG3/4X AND the SL2X?

Hey guys,

It seems lots of people sell the SL2X or the EG3/4X once they have the other. In my opinion, the stock SL2 and EG3/4 were different enough to own both and I feel the same about the modded versions. I definitely love the EG3/4X, but there is also something special about the SL2X or SL2 that I don't hear in the EG3/4X. There is something more Marshally about the SL2 or X that I do not hear in the EG. I ended up puting my SL2X back to the SL2 and I am shocked....I feel like I actually miss the SL2X now that it is gone. You would think the SL2 would be creamier and more brown but I think the SL2X...even though brighter......gets some of its cream from those upper mids famous in Marshalls. I also found the SL2X more VH friendly. Again, I guess that is odd since the stock SL2 is supposed to be browner.

So, what are you using? Both? I haven't gigged either so I haven't had that experience. I do know I noticed right away with the EG3/4X that I sat in the mix perfectly compared to the stock EG. I haven't used the SL2X with the guys yet.

Try a TS 12AX7 in V1 & a Penta 12AX7 in V2. It makes the SL2X open, tight, warm & crunchy all at the same time. You'll really like it. :thumbsup:

Thanks, good point to swap some tubes in one of them....its been a while. I don't have any Pentas sitting around. I have some TS tubes but they are all in my VHT right now. I have some Sovteks and Rubys. I know the Penta's are Chinese select. Doug at Doug's tubes loves the Ruby ACR5s as his fav Chinese tubes so maybe I'll try the TS and Ruby. And Eddie, you should try the EG3/4X. I loved the EG3/4.......but now I LOVE the EG3/4X. :thumbsup:
 
i have both.

the sl2x is a lot brighter, and more aggressive.

i like em both. :thumbsup:
 
I only have the EG34X and Hilly modded XTC (single channel). Those are my favorite "marshall style" modules. XTC for more aggression...and EG34X for a amazing solo tone and more modern type of vibe.

Sounds like the SL2 and SL2X is falling out of favor these days. At one time it was considered the best thing since sliced bread. I still really like the SL2X because I find it does the JCM type sound better than the EG3/4X and I find channel A is really clean.

My EG3/4X is a bit different than others. I have a 500pf tube board cap. I think most have a 250 or 150pf. I rasie my treble a touch and get the same thing though.
 
I don't have the EG3/4x, but the SL2x sounds still killer for me. With the SL and the SL2x I can cover all Marshall type sounds I want. I wouldn't bother with an EG3/4x, but don't necessarely need it.

I want that Plexi tone as well.....so rather than get the SL I decided to get a Jaded Faith modded Randall Plexi mod which is just as good.....but you only get the one channel. That is fone with me since I use a boost for higher gain. He also installs a push/pull gain boost.
