Anyone try 6550's in the Twin Jet?

I'm thinking about modding the resistor back and throwing in Winged C 6550's in my Twin Jet. I know a lot of people like them in the 20th Shiva...I'm not too big on KT88's, a bit too glassy and dry for my tastes...

I bet they would sound good. Make sure to use the SED Winged C. It' s the only one I would trust at Twin Jet voltage and current. Did you try the GL KT77's. They rip in mine and have been running great. Even with the master and channel volumes a tiny bit over half which is loud and powerful.

No, I haven't tried the 77's...I gotta have at least a bit of 34 crunch in there without any glassiness and a smooth high end. I know the Winged C 6550's can fit the bill, but I haven't heard any clips of the 77's yet. They seem rather obscure.

Theres more EL34 in the 77 than the 6550. Not glassy at all. Completely different tube from the KT66 and 88. Way different.

I loved the Gold Lion KT77's in my Rev Blue!

Prefer them over 34's in an Uber?
I can tell you I prefer them over the SED Winged C in this amp.

Interesting...I have Winged C 34's in there now, which are usually my favorite tube, but the TJ may be a bit underpowered by them, considering it was designed around a 150 watt power section...what differences did you notice with the switch over?

I've had the 77's in there for months now. There's plenty of power. Less glassy, more complex mids, sweeter top end. Great chunky tight bass. They don't get mushy like the el34's did. they hold together extremely well under gain and power. Also they have a better presence. More punchy. Ask Ventura. I was trying to get him to try them for a long while in his Ecstacy 20th which I had also. Once he did he's not looking back. Just a different flavor of tube that I feel compliments the Twin Jet very well. they were made for that amp. They also are safer in the higher current and voltage circuit. They are rated higher than an EL34.

This. Think of the clarity of a Winged C, but the aggressiveness of a JJ E34L. That's the best was I can describe them. The only reason I don't have them in there right now is because they're so expensive.

Sounds good to me.

I'm sure I'll try them someday. Did you try them in the Shiva? I know you really liked the Winged C 6550's in there...

I'm happy with the 6550's in the Shiva. No real need to try the 77's although I'm sure they would sound great. The Shiva for some reason doesn't have a glassy sound as much as some other KT88 amps I have tried. The 6550's sound great in the Shiva circuit.

after modding my Twin Jet, Reinhold suggested I try =C= 6550's.

at first I didn't like it, went and did a show with KT88's, and it was a bit bright.
I then did the next show with the 6550's, and it seemed to fit in the mix better. they add quite a bit of grind to the tone, and maybe mildly scoop the mids, and change the top and bottom.

for now, I'm keeping the 6550's in there.

OK, after all these tube threads, I got a pair of matched 6550 =C= to try in my 20th Shiva. I've swapped tubes in cathode bias amps before and then in my Diezel Einstein with the external trim pots and a multimeter. Is there anything I need to know about swapping tubes in the 20th Shiva? I would use a digital multimeter. Can someone give me a quick rundown of what needs to be done (fuse removal, location of trim pots, recommended bias range, settings on multimeter). Thanks! Don't want to damage the Bogner! ;)

So the amp has to be set up for KT88s in order to run 6550s?

I guess to run them in my 20th Shiva which runs EL34s, I would have to mod it to run the 6550s.

Yes you will have to change the resistance. You can see it if you can expand this pic a little. There are three blue resistors right in front of the two black caps to the left of the board. One is piggybacked. This is what you need to change. I forgot the value you will need.

In the TJ I would like to try the 6550's but I don't think they will be better than the GL 77's. One consideration for sure is the 77's are rated to handle high plate volts and current. The 6550 rated much less, even more so than the Winged C EL34. The only 6550 I would trust would be the Winged C. My Shiva toasted two pairs of other 6550's. The C's have been running strong. The TJ has quite a bit more PV and SC than even the Shiva.
