Gonna get a new nut fitted on my Les Paul soon. What advantages does a Brass nut offer that another nut say... Graphtech, couldn't offer?

I have them on two of my strats one being the YJM strat the other one of my most played vintage ones.
The main advantage is that you don't have to change it every so often. In terms of sound, you get more clarity on open strings.

I usually use a teflon lube or pencil led on the grooves to retain tuning as well.

Yeah, I used to have one on my old Les Paul. I had it on there so long, I couldnt' really remember what it sounded like with the standard nut. I remember not really noticing much of a difference though.

They have a slightly brighter/metallic tone on open strings. They seem to transmit the vibrations behind the fretted note back into the neck well. I cant comment on how they hold up to long term trem use but I just got a 2005 yngwie strat that is basically NOS and it seems to be working well in regards to the tremolo. I have had one on a hardtial for a while and it has held up well. Graphite nuts sound terrible to me. Bone or Brass are my favorite nut materials.

Who plays lots of open chords on a Les Paul except Neil Young? :D

I prefer bone, uninstalled the brass when it came with my '76 LPC.

I had one in one of my Strats and then I put LSR and then switched back to the original.
Not my kind of thing, they sound too trebly and give an unreal feel to the guitar, plus I had the impression that it detuned more often than usual.
BTW LSR is worse than brass.

Ditto, took mine off in favor of a bone version, too.

Never played a brass nut. I keep putting graphtech nuts on my guitars with great results.
