Guys,

A friend of mine stopped using amp distortion and switched to a pedal and loves it. He had some great amps too. He likes the simplicity but he says it is some of the best tone he has had. The simplicity is not using an effects loop and lots less cables to run. He goes Wah - OD/Dist pedal - Chorus/Delay/Flange - out to amp input which is a 1974 Marshall NMV JMP set to totally clean. I have heard it and it is awesome.

However, I personally can't see not using my VHT or Bogner. :)

No surprises here! But, hey, to each their own. Personally, I've always been an organic, amp kind of guy.......

I've tried a ton of OD pedals, and I don't like the way they thin out the tone. I too am an amp OD guy. I actually bought a Wampler Pinacle to use in my clean channel, but took it back to the store, never again.

What pedal is he using?

The Marshall is a single channel so I could see why he would use a pedal. The only pedal I like in front of my JMP100 is the Suhr riot. As for my Bogner 20th X I like just the amp and some reverb and/or Delay.

I am an amp guy too....but a good pedal CAN sound very good. My Xotic BB sounds huge and thick!!!!!!!! Almost as good as the amp, through the clean channel.

That said, I use these pedals as backup only. Perfect example, a friend's band did a gig. When they arrived, the manager said for everyone to just use the backline JCM 900! In that case, he used his trusty Emma FreezaFratzits and it was great sounding!

Joe Bonamassa used just the green channel of a Marshall JVM and a DSL, playing through several pedals when playing in Oslo. He had a REALLY good sound but not as good sound as through his regular rig where he uses a mixture of several heads.
By the way did you buy the 20th Shiva since you were interested in one earlier on?

I use a MI crunch box with my Shiva when we use in ears and I can't play at normal volume. Sounds OK. Use a TS9 with it for a solo boost. I have seen lots of players use pedals for gain for there main tone, but I can't get my head around spending the bucks for a dream rig only to push it with pedals.
