Guys,

In the past, when I needed a load box to run a tube amp silently without a cab, I always used a THD Hot Plate. I stopped using it and sold it a while back because even running through cab simulators of various brands, I was never happy with the results. Now with the Renegade, the Direct Out sounds pretty amazing, and am thinking about getting a load box again so I can run it silently when necessary. Is the THD still the best option here, or are there others I should be looking into? I don't want to spend a ton, and I know I can get a used Hot Plate for about $250-$300.

Thanks!

Weber makes some good attenuators. I have a Mass 150 which works well.

Yes I have ..... that is why I use my THD.

I noticed on Leno last night that Kevin had a purple 16ohm THD last night. First time I've noticed that but he's also running the amp behind him versus to the side so his gear actually gets camera shots.

Purple is 8 ohm, 16 ohm are blue.

He has been using then for some time.

So if you can switch you amp from 4,8 or 16 ohm does it really matter which THD you get? I have a Mesa Mk III that is 8 ohm or (2) 4 ohm, was wondering if there is a tonal difference and does Suhr OD,PT 100,Hiwatt DG103, Bogner xtc, and Marshall jcm800 have switchable 4,8,16 ohms? So if I bought a THD in 8 ohm I would only need one.

You can go one down and still get good tone ..... 16 works well for 16/8 ..... 8 works for 8/4. You can use the 16 on a 4 but the tone well be a bit off.

I use a 16 because I do not use a 4 ohm cab much.

I have used it with my Mark IV (same as your III) lots of times.

Each model is voiced best for what it is ....16,8, etc.

As for the other amps i have no idea.

There is a link to the manual and what not is here ....

Thanks!!! so most likely an 8 ohm since the Mesa is 8 and all my Egnater stuff is switchable. I will check the other amps ohms out before I decide.

I have been thinking about picking up a 8 .... so I can do 16 / 8/ 4 because some of my amps I feel sound best with a 4 ohms load.

You could always ask THD to make sure you get what you need.

I USE A BAD CAT LEASH WITH MY LYNCHBOX...IT SOUNDS GREAT...the Leash has a 4/8/16 ohm impedance switch

I have a Weber Mass 150. It does all impedances and uses an actual speaker motor for the most natural attenuation. I love how it allows you to control the balance of lows-low mids/highs-high mids. It seems pretty transparent to me guys.
