I have the opportunity to get a 79' SG in great condition for $2400. Is that a good price or not worth it?

Disregard. Just read that the late 70s and early 80s were not good years for that guitar.

The Norlin years used to be the worst for Les Pauls. People hated them.
I got a 78 Custom for $550 in 98. Dude couldn't get rid of it.
Now look at them. $3g+ is players condition, and everyone says they looooooooove them.
So yeah, 79 is the best year for an SG.

Yeah seems a bit high but not horrible. Guy kept it in the case and great condition though.
If you're truly interested, maybe check it out and see if there's some negotiating? There ARE some positive things about Norlins, it was known as a bad quality era for sure so you have to take it on a guitar by guitar basis.

Just buy a new ‘61 SG they’re killer guitars

What are the necks like on these?
I have a Silverburst standard with a bound ebony fretboard from 2009-10, that has kind of a wider neck. Love it.
I've played some SGs that have tiny necks that I can't stand. Feels like a banjo.

They also have a slightly wider feel than my R0. They’re killer guitars and sound remarkably huge for 7.5 lbs

Hey Hey, there's one in stock at the GC on my way home from work.
Will go check it out. For fun.
Y'all know that's why I end up with at least half the stuff I have, right?
That's like $1600 with a MF coupon. Not bad.

I did end up swapping out the bridge pup in mine though

What did you replace and what with?
I've never left a stock bridge pup in a Gibson, except the Slash. Not even the Custom Buckers in an R8 that folks rave about.
Currently waffling about the T-Type in the ES-335. I'm going to have a freed up set of Godwoods that I know has to be better.
But that pup swap is a chore.

Sorry if we hijacked your thread! But I would take a nice new guitar over an old one that needs work any day.
I can't believe how much my old 2002 Classic is worth these days. That was the cheapest thing on the rack back then! In it's current, very relic'd shape, it goes for more than it did new. Makes no sense to me.

I went with a Wolfetone Timbre Wolf

Oh no way man, no such thing as high jacking a thread for me. I love the great discussions!

You would have to play it…alot of those had really narrow nut widths. I love SGs, but the 70’s not really a fan. Went thru a bunch and settled on a 90 SG Custom. Newer ones are pretty cool as long as the neck angle is good…some have the bridge high off the body I don’t like.

I have a 71 Flying V and a 74 LPC .... Unbelievable guitars that are as good as my Kramers, Jackson's and Fenders .
As some one stated, it's basically a guitar to guitar basis thing .
